Basecamp confusion

I'm trying to use BaseCamp but having some confusion about several of its features. Unfortunately the help, whether video or textual, is pretty sketchy.

1. When I display a track, it shows an orange circle sometimes. What does that circle mean?

2. When I display a track and try to examine a point on it, I see a balloon indicating several other tracks as well as the one I'm interested in. What is that all about?

3. Is it possible to split a track using the menus, or only using the icon?

4. Sometimes I get into a state where it seems that several tracks (in the same area) are being displayed simultaneously. What do I do to restrict the display to a single track?

I have more questions, but answering these should get me going.

I have an Etrex Venture HC and I'm trying to use it to create a trail map for a forest where there are no official trails.
  • 1. Unsure. Have you set a proximity setting on a waypoint? That creates a circle.

    2. That's how it works. Many of us don't like that but 'it is what it is'. I guess some folks find it useful

    3. Not sure how you would do it using a menu, you need to somehow indicate where you want the split, seems obvious to me to use the 'split track' tool, any reason why you don't want to?

    4. Create a list with just the items you want to see. When you select a list you only see what's in that list.

    1. Basecamp shows an orange circle for the currently selected trackpoint. You can select a trackpoint by clicking on the map, or open the track properties dialogue and pick it from the list. If you select multiple trackpoints, Basecamp will highlight them all in orange (but without a circle).

    3. I think you have to use divide tool to split a track. Note you can open the track properties window, then select a list of points, then use delete, cut, copy, paste. So you could cut points from one track, and paste them into another track, instead of splitting.
