I just purchased a Toshiba laptop with windows 8. It will NOT recognize my GPS. When plugged in to the usb port it just says: "Serial port COM1 does not exist"

I installed the Gamin Communicator and it picks up and identifys my GPS fine.

Any ideas???

thanks

Did you install the Garmin USB driver?

It doesn't even show up in My computer.

A 76Cx won't show up in My Computer unless it is in mass-storage mode which you only use when you need to access the microSD card (for maps) etc.

You need to try BaseCamp or MapSource and see if your 76Cx is found.

    Not sure what's going on.

    A few things to try

    * Put your 76Cx into mass-storage mode (MENU, MENU -> Setup -> Interface -> USB Mass Storage) and see if a drive letter is assigned in Windows Explorer etc. This will test the USB connection (but not the Garmin driver).

    * If that works look in Device Manager (in Control Panel, System) and check that the Garmin driver is loaded when you connect your 76Cx (not in mass-storage mode).

    * Try running MapSource as an administrator.

I'm using Win7 x64, with the Garmin USB driver, and my 76CSx is found by all Garmin software.
