Track distance difference on Etrex odometer vs track

I just got myself an Etrex 30 for hiking/walking.
At moment I am learning the device and I think I gonna like it.
Could someone please explain this to me though:
I've walked a short distance and I am not 100% sure what the ACTUAL distance was because:
Whist walking the trip odometer showed the distance as 6.5km whilst the track shows 7.0km.
Why the difference? and which should I consider to be the correct one?
Is it possible I have some setting wrong?
Thanks for a possible reply.
Andrè
PS: I think I found my "problem" - I've reset my odometer when I started the walk BUT never thought to clear the track as well - it still had some ,5km on it from the previous day while I was "testing" the device around my home.
Sorry for the wasted post - just glad I found the "error".
Regards

I have only just found this thread and it reminded me of a question I have to do with distance in hilly ground?

I belong to our village walking group, walking each Tuesday, and we are often in quite hilly country. I am about the only one with an Etrex 30, most others have pedometers, and at the end of a walk they normally give a different distance to my Etrex. My question is, does the Etrex measure the actual distance covered or just the flat distance without taking into account the rise and fall along the way?
