inaccurate distances on Garmin Connect for Garmin 510

A friend of mine has a new 510 and can't understand why it shows less distance than using his iphone via strava.

I've checked the data for both devices and have come to the conclusion that the problem lies with Garmin Connect.

My reasons are as follows:-
I've taken two files that had been uploaded to Garmin Connect and show the wrong distance there.
I've deleted them and re-uploaded (just in case the upload was wrong). The results are the same.
I've taken the two files and exported to GPX format.
From there I've imported to Strava, opened the files in MapSource and Google Earth and viewed distances.

Strava, MapSource and Google Earth all show similar distances - a substantially different distance to that shown on Garmin Connect

I've also viewed the data in Excel. Excel indicates that Garmin GPX files (as created and exported from Garmin Connect) have the wrong XMLschema reference. It looks like Garmin have re-organised their schema locations and the GPX files point to the wrong location.

If you could attach the original FIT or TCX file then some of us could check and possibly give an explanation for the variance in distance.
  • I should add that the Garmin 510 device shows the same (incorrect) distance that Garmin Connect shows... so is this a combined firmware / software issue?

I've got the GPX files handy ...but they're too big to upload.

GPX files will zip down very small.
  • GPX files ex Garmin Connect

The attached zip file contains two GPX files.

The GPX files were created using Garmin Connect export. Garmin Connect displays the corresponding data showing understated distances (which match what the Garmin 510 shows).

When these very same files are uploaded into MapSource, Strava or Google Earth they show the correct distance.

The XMLschema reference is wrong (doesn't reflect where Garmin NOW store the Schema).

Seeing a similar issue with my new Garmin -- was there any conclusion to this thread?

I recently got a Garmin 510 and used it last weekend (Sep 7) on the RBC Granfondo Whistler. The course distance is well known to be 122Km. My Garmin tells me that I rode only 116Kms, a significant difference of 6Kms. Other folks riding with me had their devices showing the correct 122Kms. And no, I did not take any shortcuts :-).

Also, if I enable the "Elevation Corrections" on my route it tells me that I climbed much more than if I disable it. It's a huge difference: 3,447m vs. 2,155m. Which one is more accurate?

Appreciated if anyone has any pointers to provide.

    Claudio.

We cannot help without seeing the actual track.
  • If you're navigating by the course, then this is to be expected. In the 510 forums this is fairly well documented. When following a course, the distance on the 510 and on Garmin Connect under reads by about 10%. When transferred to Strava or if you create a course from the activity in Garmin Connect, you'll see the correct distance. From what I understand, Garmin know about the issue and are hoping to have a Beta version released with a fix around 20 September.

    Cheers,

Thanks for the info. I was not aware. I saved my activity as a course and now I see 121.44Kms which is much closer to the expected 122Kms. However, I also see my "time" going to 4h38min, when in fact it was 4h25min (as seen by both my 510 unit and the official race chip I had in my bike). So, the course shows me a more accurate distance but incorrect time and the activity shows accurate time but incorrect distance. Did I miss something?

If you have any additional pointers on this "well documented" issue, it would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Claudio.
