Multiple maps on nüvi 255W

I have an old nüvi 255W that I received from my parents and it has the old 2011 maps on it. My dad has put on the newest version (2014.10 North America, somehow it is 2014...?) on the sd card named gmapprom.img because the new mapset is larger and won't fit on the device. There is also a file that is 2013.40 Europe named gmapsupp.img on the card. However, even when I go in and change the names to gmapsuppSAVE.img on the sd card, I cannot see the new map. I would like to have the updated map for North America (since I drive in Canada sometimes), and preferably have the option for Europe as well since I am going in a few weeks. In any case, when I turn on the device and go to settings-->maps all i see is the old 2011 map. If I simply rename/remove the gmapprom.img on my device (not sd card) then there is an error that there are no maps.

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to see the new North America map and Europe too?

Where are gmapprom.img and gmapsupp.img on the SD card? They should probably be in a \Garmin folder. Also each should have a corresponding .gma/.unl file (unlock codes).

\Garmin\gmapprom.img ==> CN North America (pre-loaded map)
\Garmin\gmapsupp.img ==> CN Europe (added as a supplemental map)

You should be able to rename the gmapprom.img (2011 CN NA) to gmapprom.sav etc or even delete it if the above .img's are in the correct folder etc.

BTW where did your dad get CN NA NT 2014.10? It's not available (for me) yet?

No unl files though. Maybe they are hidden?

If you can see the .img's I doubt they're hidden.

I don't know where he got them, but I have a feeling they may be shady.

I don't think 2014.10 is out yet although it is due.

As a test try this.

1) Move the .img's on the SD card to another folder (e.g. \Save).

2) Copy the .img from the 255W to the \Garmin folder on the SD card.

3) Rename the .img on the device to .sav.

The 255W should still see and use the 2011 maps. That'll verify that \Garmin is the correct folder and the SD card is working ok.
