CPSmap 60Cx how do I just use this for accurate GPS coordinates

Hello,

My wife would like to use this in a garden to map GPS coordinates of individual plants - two questions:

1. Is there a setting I can use to do this? All of the settings seem to be for travel and distance between waypoints - I just need to know the GPS of where I'm standing.

2. If I purchase software for my city will it be accurate enough to change location as the unit moves? The currently installed map does not have enough accuracy to change position over such a small area.

Thanks
Charles
  • Sorry but consumer gps simply don't have the sort of accuracy to plot individual plants.
  • As SUSSAMB said you'd need survey or military grade GPS to get that sort of accuracy. About the best you'll get with a consumer grade device is 3m (10ft) and that is with WAAS enabled.

It depends on how accurate you need it to be. Yes, you can probably get within about 3m most of the time, if you have a clear view of the sky, and assuming you can use WAAS/EGNOS.
You could improve accuracy a bit by averaging the waypoints. The 60csx has a feature for this - you can mark a waypoint, then leave it in the same location for several minutes, it will take an average of the readings. You could repeat this several times, on different days etc, then take the average of all of your measurements.

For mapping, the built in basemap is pretty useless, it probably just has a few main roads, and is rather inaccurate. You could try some free maps, eg from OpenStreetMap. These would be much more useful.
  • Have a look here, and esp the various links down the LHS.
  • Just buy a bigger card (1GB is "small" these days) and copy the contents of the old card to the new card.

As for Garmin Express dump it and use GarminMapUpdater instead.
  • OK, the 1GB might have been what it came with.

As I recall the 60Cx/60CSx came with a 64MB card. I know my 76CSx came with a 128MB one. I still have it though it's not useful for much these days.

There's an 8GB card for sale this week, I assume that will be enough for one city.

I keep a 8GB card in my 76CSx and keep City Navigator maps for the entire US on that along with Topo's for 4 states.

Once I've uploaded the new map my question still is where to go to just view GPS coordinates.

Not sure exactly what you're asking. There's no way, that I recall, to show the map around an area by manually entering coordinates. You either scroll/zoom on tha map page or create a dummy waypoint (entering the coordinates) and display that on the map.
  • The Satellite page shows your current coordinates.

  • FYI the GPS position changes with every foot step...

In most cases yes. But don't confuse resolution with accuracy.

Indeed. The GPS position will change even when you don't move...
  • I can lay any of my gps's out in the wide open with out moving it for 15 minutes and the recorded track will look like I was walking all over my yard during that time. Most of it's well within ten to fifteen feet, but almost always some notable fifty to seventy feet deviations.
