Uploading data from a .tcd file to Garmin Connect - HELP!

Hi,

Here's the story. I am really stumped about what to do.

I have data from Training Center and I would like to upload it to Garmin Connect. The installation of Training Center I was using maybe 18 months ago had all my data in it. I no longer have that installation but I have many backup files created at various times. These backups are in .tcd format which Garmin Connect cannot read directly. So I installed Training Center (version 3.6.5) expecting to be able to export to .tcx and then upload that to Garmin Connect.

Unfortunately when I "restore" any of those .tcd files in Training Center most of the older data is missing. Here's the thing. The data is in there. I can run sqlite queries (tcd is simply an sqlite database) against the .tcd files and I see it. But everything before April 17, 2011 is simply omitted when I do the restore. I've tried restoring multiple files, any of which would have the year or so I am missing, and they all start in 2011 even though the tcd file demonstrably has data back to 2004.

So basically, Training Center is failing to fully read the backup files it created itself. I know Training Center has been abandoned by Garmin in favor of Garmin Connect. I'm trying to make that switch myself too. But...

Does anyone have any ideas? My sqlite skills are nowhere near sufficient to convert this stuff to tcx myself. I'd like to try an older version of Training Center but I cannot find one to download. Is there another way to make the transition from Training Center to Connect?

You could try this for older versions of Training Center: http://www.gawisp.com/perry/forerunner/

Sincere thanks for that link. I was very hopeful about an older version working.

So, after a binge of uninstalling and installing versions of GTC for Windows, I can report that 3.3.x, 3.4.x, and 3.5.x do not support the .tcd format. That was introduced in the 3.6 series. A more careful reading of the Change History would have saved me some time. :-) Unfortunately 3.6.1 and 3.6.3 behave exactly the same as 3.6.5.

I found an announcement in the Training Center forums for 3.6.1 - it came out on April 13, 2011. I have a run on April 17 in these tcd files that restores correctly and one on the 13th that is missing. I found an email to some friends on April 15 saying I had installed 3.6.1 without any problems; I surely would have noticed if all the runs disappeared. It's hard to imagine this timing being a coincidence. Surely other people with data spanning the release (or install - I can't tell which date is the critical one) of the 3.6 series of Training Center noticed that a backup/restore doesn't work properly? Or am I unique here?

Oh my god, I am an idiot. At least in 3.6.3, the other runs *were* restored - just to a different top level folder. I was so used to seeing things in "My Activities" that I didn't bother looking in the "Imported Activities" folder. Everything that I thought was missing is in there, broken up into several different sub-folders. The logic behind this partitioning of the data escapes me but who cares - I have what I need now! :-)

3.6.5 works fine too. Apologies to anyone who wasted time on this thread. The takeaway is to look in *all* the folders!
  • Hello Bill, I'm writing from Italy as I have exactly your same problem. I have tcd files created with Training Center that are not anynore possible to be opened. Currently I have the version 3.6.5 installed on my computer, but it can open just tcx files (also created with Training Center). Could you be so kind and guide me on what I should make? Thank you

    Andrea

  • I think you'll need an even older version of Training Center. I have Training Center Legacy Version 3.5.3, which I believe uses the tcd database. Once opened, you should be able to export as TCX files out of Training Center, then import into Garmin Connect. Very tedious process. I can test later when I get some time.

  • Thank you very much! I wait for news from you :-)

  • Might be able to get an older version of GTC from . If not, I have 3.5.3.

  • I tried to write him, waiting for his answer. Thank you, you're very kind. In case, I'll ask you 3.5.3
