Nuvi 50LM newbie questions

How do you get the left side bar to display as your approaching a turn? It's the bar that fills to 100%.

My screen shows a Edit - Go - Return arrow, on the bottom left as I'm driving a mapped route. I don't need to see it, so how can I get rid of it?
