missing miles

I am new to using a garmin I have an edge 500, with HR and cadence. I went on a ride today round a loop that I know is 52miles when I got back i checked the Garmin and it said I had done 42 miles. i looked at the map and it shows the loop correctly but has some lines through it in places . what can cause this?
