EDGE 500 - Weird mileage showing up, max speed 100mph+?!

Hi all,

Hope someone can help me - I use both Strava and Garmin Connect but I'm seeing massive differences in the data.

For example, my Edge 500 shows the route I did today (62.1 miles) but calculates it as 43.5 miles - Strava has it correctly calculated.
I *think* it's to do with me using the same roads twice - anyone any experience of this?

Lastly, my max speed is silly - often hitting 120mph+. I'd like to think I'm fast but even I know the truth on this one!

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!
  • Can you provide links to your activities? It's difficult to diagnose without seeing what they look like.

Also, are you using a speed and cadence sensor?

Using the same roads twice should not make a difference.

As far as a high max speed - The point-to-point speed values are noisy, and this sometimes results in absurdly high maximum speeds.

    Hi,

    HR and Cadence sensors.

    http://connect.garmin.com/activity/300631002

Not sure if you can see that or not? Also, I've had to change the mileage manually so it might not look instantly odd...

    Thanks for your help!

  • No, I can't see the activity because you don't have it set to be publicly viewable. Click the lock icon on GC to unlock it and make it viewable.

If you are using the speed and cadence sensor, how is it set up? Did you enter a wheel size, or is it automatically determined?

Is this the first ride that this has happened after many successful rides, or is this the first time that you are using your Edge 500?

Changed so you can see it now.

Set up - didnt enter a wheel size but it was working OK on previous 10 or so rides. Started going astray in the last few rides...

  • The GPS track looks pretty normal, except at the start or finish. There's a straight line that you would not have been able to actually ride. I'm not sure what happened. When you finish your activity, what are you doing? The proper procedure is to press the start/stop button, then press and hold the lap/reset button to get the 3-2-1 countdown. If you're doing that, then I'm not sure what caused the straight line. At any rate, it only looks to be a mile or two.

The next thing to look at is the speed cadence sensor. I highly recommend not using the automatic wheel size, which is what you are doing. I highly recommend entering the actual number. It's easy to measure, or you can look it up in a table if you know your tire size. There's a table in the Garmin manual, and if you search, you'll find them on the internet, also. For example, for a 700x23 tire, the wheel size 2096.

The next likely problem would be if the magnet wasn't lined up with the sensor properly. Perhaps the magnet or sensor got moved out of alignment or it wasn't great to begin with.

Oops, not doing that when I finish. Just stopping the timer and turning off. I'll check that!

I'll sort the wheel size and sensor out and just refit it and see what happens next.

Thanks for the help so far :)
