Correct Setup Activity Setting?

Former Member

I am new user with a question regarding setting the correct activity. Here is my configuration information:

Garmin GPSMAP 62sc
Firmware version 3.60 (March 13, 2013)
SanDisk Ultra 8GB microSDHC Class 10 Memory Card

City Navigator North America NT
TOPO U.S. 24K West
BirdsEye TOPO, U.S. and Canada

Garmin Basecamp version 4.1.2 (March 11, 2013)

In the Garmin 62sc under Setup->Routing->Activity, what is the correct setting for hiking a mountain trail? The default setting is “Direct Routing”. Should this always be set to “Hiking” if this is my primary activity? When I first set this to Hiking, the Garmin display an error saying something about too many points (not sure) forcing me to change it back to “Direct Routing”.
  • Depends how you like to plan your routes. I use direct on BC and my GPS, and create 'point to point' routes. If you have a routeable map and you're happy to allow your GPS to choose your route then set it to hiking.
