Heart Rate Registering When I'm NOT wearing strap?

I have a new Forerunner 305 and the first two runs posted avg hr when I wasn't wearing a strap. They closely resemble how I ran (yesterday, slow and aerobic and today high for hills). Is this an issue with Garmin Connect, or possibly interference due to my iphone worn on my arm, or even static electricity?? I'm in Colorado, so it's somewhat dry and I do wear those synthetic shirts, gloves, etc. I never experienced this with any of my other Garmin units, so thought I would post and see if it's a common occurance? Thanks!

Same issue here, no heart rate monitor on today and a steady 166bpm for the entire run allegedly?

Any solutions to false heart rate recordings without a heart rate monitor?

Make sure you actually pair your HRM with your Forerunner, rather than relying on the default wild-card pairing that the FR does when you first enable the HRM.
    1. Make sure there are no others with ANT+ HRM's in the area
    2. Put on the HRM as you would for running and make sure your Forerunner says it's connected to the HRM.
    3. On the Forerunner, go to the HRM sensor menu, and select 'Rescan'. It should again say it's found the HRM.
    4. Power down the Forerunner.
