New user - Oregon 450T

Hi to all,

Not sure if this is the correct forum or not... I am first time user of Garmin forum and Garmin devices (other than vehicle GPS). I live in eastern Canada and bought unit for outdoor activities. Used it yesterday and all worked fine. Heading to New York this Thursday and was hoping to use my Oregon 450T for directions. Unit has Canadian maps but not US maps. Can someone suggest best city maps to use (especially for New York) and does anyone know if the unit will work in New York city or not. Thanks in advance for any help or advise. Doug

The Oregon will work anywhere in the world, whether you have maps loaded or not. Though it may take a bit longer to figure out your location if you have moved a long way since you last used it. And it may be less accurate if you have a poor view of the sky, eg between tall buildings.

As for maps, you could get some free maps from OpenStreetMap. This is probably the easiest website: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
  • I used my Oregon 550 for walking in lower Manhattan last summer. Because of the "urban canyon" effect, I was not able to maintain a consistent lock. Sometimes my position was off by several hundred feet (a block or more) and at times I would completely lose satellite lock. But of course, having access to the map was still helpful.
