Hello,
I have the Garmin nuvi 3590LM with a 2gb memory card that's empty and I would like to know which files can I move to the 2nd memory card to save space on the internal memory card. Please advise.
  • Any reason why you want to do this? It does affect the advice you get.

However before you do anything you ought to back up your GPS. First, with the newer nuvis they need to be set to mass storage mode. To do that:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
    7. Start NUVI and it should recognize it is hooked up to the computer.

As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "dashboard" screen, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.

Then you need to set Windows so that it shows hidden and system files:

Now you should see in Explorer all the files/folders on your nuvi, including the .system folder. Make a back up of all the folders/files.

You can then free up a considerable amount of space on your nuvi by deleteing the unwanted files in the following folders; EULA, help, voices, text, vehicle and keyboard. When you look in some of them you will see numerous language specific files that you probably would never use!

Having done all of that right click your nuvi in Explorer, select properties and see how much free space you have, then consider whether there is even a need for a card!
