Two Basic Questions (1) Selecting a Route, (2) Downloading Saved Places

Hi

This is my first post on this forum. I have acquired a nuvi 3590LM with full North American maps (I live in Australia, but will be travelling extensively in the US and Canada in May-June).

I wish to travel the entire Blue Ridge Parkway from Cherokee NC to Afton VA (and then join the Skyline Drive through to Front Royal). How do I construct a route - and sub-routes (ie, Saved Trips) - that will stick to these two slow roads - I have tried intermediate towns, Intersections, and Coordinates, but am always defeated - the device finds a way to get me back on a major highway every time, to provide the Shortest or Fastest. Can I force it to follow both these slow highways their whole length somehow?

And secondly, I would like a hard-copy of all my saved places (this is an eight-week trip so there are quite a lot of them). How do I download my saved places and saved routes? I have installed garmin.express, but I still seem to be having difficulty.

Any assistance will be appreciated.
  • Have you tried creating the routes in Garmin Connect by manually making the route, saving it, then uploading it to your device? You can click whatever road you want on the map.

No I haven't - I'll try using Garmin Connect - thanks for that.

It seems Garmin Connect is just for runners and bikers, and isn't relevant to Car GPS routes. Any other references you can provide?

    Thanks for that.

Garmin BaseCamp seems exactly what I was after. I'm slowly learning to use it, and have successfully sent two new routes to the device.

However I have a technical problem - when I save a route (either manually created on the device, or through BaseCamp) it creates dozens and dozens of entries in the Trip Planner App list ... and does not allow any more to be created (the "+" sign is greyed out). When I delete one, it deletes all of them, and the list is empty. There is something seriously wrong with however the device stores these in its internal memory. Any thoughts or possible solutions?

And does a Full Reset lose the maps (I have North American and Australia-NZ loaded). I don't mind losing all the points I have laboriously created, but the maps are a different issue of course. Is there some other way to fix the Trip Planner error I am getting? Thanks for any assistance.

I can reply to myself ... I managed to successfully reset the device, without losing all my stored locations, and now the Trip Planner is working perfectly. However my remaining issue is setting up a route in BaseCamp - how can I modify the chosen route easily via the map? I wish to stick to the slow and inefficient Blue Ridge Parkway, not for the route to be optimised. I can keeping adding towns (new waypoints) and so on - but can I do manually? By Insert, or some other technique? The Insert function doesn't seem to do anything for me. Any assistance appreciated.

Does anyone actually look at this forum? Just asking.
