910XT: Indoor Swimming Activites OVERSTATED and Indoor Running & Cycling Understated

I am a new user, so some of this may just be user error .. Hoping you expert users can assist me! My indoor swim shows different strokes. My entire swim was freestyle only. I did do a few lengths with a kickboard, so chalked up a bit of the error with the fact that the watch wasn't moving in a freestyle motion. But, I think I did about 600 yards or so; yet, the watch showed a totla of 975 yards. Not correct. In the gym today, I ran on the treadmill for 30 minutes - the distance was way understated & did a 30 min cycling class -- of which nothing but my HR was accurately captured. Please help ... :( .. I need full functionality from this expensive toy !
  • You should be in the 910xt forum: https://forums.garmin.com/forumdisplay.php?305-Forerunner-910XT

If you search there you will see posts about swimming accuracy and how to improve it. Depending on your personal stroke mechanics your accuracy may vary. There are some tips to improve it -- i.e.
try to hold consistent form and stroke rate thoughout each length. Do not change strokes during a length. Get a strong push off of the wall at turns and be sure to glide a little bit. Press LAP when stopping to rest at the wall, and press LAP again when you start your next set.

Some people still see errors with lap counting.

Regarding running and cycling... the watch by itself does not do distance indoors. It uses GPS for distance outside. If you want to track distance indoors running, then you need to buy a footpod to pair with the watch when used inside. Search amazon for SDM4, for example.

If you want to get speed and cadence indoors on a bicycle trainer, then you need to pair it with other ANT+ accessories, such as a GSC-10. Some gym spinning bikes are ANT+ enabled and can be paired with the watch too, although in my experiences this is a little limited yet.

When indoors you should turn the GPS feature off.

    Good luck.

For the swim portion, you'll find that the turn detection may be quite sensitive to small changes in your stroke, and it may take a bit of time before you (and it) agree on what should be counted as a turn and what is not.

Otherwise, indoor training with the 910 requires a footpod (which you'll have to do some calibration on if you want <1% error), and a speed/cadence sensor such as the GSC10 to accurately record distance and cadence while biking. The GPS functionality alone can't help you indoors.

If you do have those accessories, then you have to be sure that they are actually paired with your watch (go through the pairing procedure in the manual). If they were just 'found' by the 910 when you first enabled those accessories, then the watch may still be in wildcard pairing mode and it will find other user's sensors and display their data.
