Nuvi 1450 completely dead

I have a Garmin Nuvi 1450 purchased December 2010.
Mid-way through a highway trip it froze – no response to touching the screen.
After about 20 more minutes and many miles of driving with no change to the image on the screen and still no response to touching the screen, I pushed the power button and turned it off. I waited about 5 minutes and pushed the power button to turn it back on – no response. It’s been dead ever since with a black screen and no flicker of life.
Throughout the trip above it was plugged into my Garmin factory-provided cigarette lighter power adapter and the green power light on the adapter remained on. The unit has not been dropped or subjected to any abuse.
Now…
While plugged into my computer, the computer does not acknowledge the presence of the device, and no response from the Garmin, just black screen. After 2 hours of charging (no computer sleep mode) and with the device still plugged into the computer:
The computer still does not acknowledge the presence of the device.
I pushed and held the Garmin’s power button for 60 seconds – no response, just black screen.
I pushed and held the Garmin’s power button while at the same time touching the bottom right corner of the screen – no response, just black screen.
Any suggestions...?
  • Sounds like it's broken ... either that or for some reason the battery has died. It's possible I guess that the vehicle power cord wasn't working and now the battery is completely flat. I'd leave it on charge overnight. If still no response in the morning then it may be time for a new GPS, pity as I have a 1490 and think it's far better than anything else on offer at the moment so I'm hoping mine lasts forever :)
  • Well you said since then you'd had no response ... that it's been dead with a black screen.

Only one other thing you could try, press and hold the power button for around 20 seconds or so. If pressing and holding doesn't do anything then I reckon it's dead.

How to Fix a Nuvi 1450 if the firmware is crashed and it won't boot

I had exactly the same problem and this is how I fixed it. I located a file named nuvi13-14xx_SG_v260.exe on the web. I downloaded it and copied to a folder on my hard drive. You will need an SD card to go to the next step. Run the program and it will create a file on your SD card. It will probably be a GCD file. Then I created a folder on my hard drive and downloaded a zip file called GarminCure3.zip. I unzipped it into the same folder and copied the file from the SD card into that folder. I then ran the GarminCure3 program and dragged the file onto the file name block in the window. I then selected original and OK and it created a new RGN file in the directory. I tried to run UPDATER from the UPDATER window but it failed so I loaded a DOS window and changed the directory to where the program and file was. I then entered a DOS command UPDATER [full file name] but I didn't hit enter. I then pushed the upper left hand corner of the 1450 and attached the USB cable. Within a couple of seconds you could hear it attach to the computer and it will go into pre-boot mode for about 20 seconds. Hit ENTER as soon as you hear the sound alerting you to the fact that Windows has recognized the device and the UPDATER program will recognize the device and the program will start running. It will reboot several times but finally it will restart and you should be back up and running. Then make sure you have downloaded the Garmin Communicator, USB files and the WebUpdater Program on your computer. (Probably should have done this before you started). Keep the 1450 attached and run the WebUpdater program. It should now recognize your device and it will tell you if the software is up-to-date or not. If not, let it update the software. It will have erased your favorites and settings but you will have your GPS back without having to spend $120 to have Garmin do the same thing.

If you need more help, email me at [email protected] and I would be happy to help you. It took me three days and probably 15 hours to figure out how to do this. Garmin was no help at all.

    Hi pmygatt
In this case Garmin was a great help. Even though it was beyond the warranty date they replaced the whole thing at no charge.
I really appreciate you sending me this information and will save it for the future, although I hope I won't have to use it.
    Thanks very much.

Mine just froze up the same way and they still want me to pay $110 to replace it when I got it for $180!! I'm so angry right now! They want to make me pay for an error their programmers caused! Been a Garmin user for almost a decade and never thought they'd treat customers like this!
  • Perhaps you could explain exactly what happened ...

Been using it without any problems for 2 years. The battery is still great and in general it worked flawlessly. One day(when I'm in the middle of the Green Mountains in Vermont with no cell phone reception) I turn it on and it never moves past the Garmin start screen. I tried all the types of resets with no response. When I plug it into the computer it never gets recognized either. This seems to be a problem that many Nuvi 1450 owners experience.

Have a look through this thread https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?60945-nuvi-1490-will-not-power-up-after-map-update

To run the cure program it looks like I need to download the firmware. I can't seem to find a place to download. The only thing I see is that I have to download garmin express but it won't let me download the firmware without having the GPS connected to the computer. That can't happen since the computer won't recognize the GPS. Any suggestions?

Did you try any of the procedures in the thread that SUSSAMB linked to see if you could get your 1450 into mass-storage mode (i.e. recognized by a computer)? Unless you can do that having a firmware file won't help.
