Why is the mileage on my GPS (550T) different on Garmin Connect?

When I bike/hike/walk my 550 will give me a reading for mileage. For example, I rode Palm Canyon on March 2 2013 and the GPS gave a mileage of 27.58 but when I uploaded to my account on Garmin connect, it showed up as only 24 miles. When you view the map in Connect, you can see the trail line clearly BUT the route overlap ignores that show what looks like a "best guess" to the next point. Ironically, I roe with several friends who all used apps on their iphones and they all had the EXACT same mileage. Why in the world is the free app more accurate than the EXPENSIVE Garmin?

Is there a fix of setting for this?

Please advise.
  • I don't know if you can do it on the 550, but go into your setup for the log/tracking options and see if you can tell it to save more datapoints. Your log will fill up quicker, but you'll get a better representation of where you went.
