Cannot enter mass storage mode

I have a Garmin 1490 and I cannot get it to enter mass storage mode. I have plugged it into multiple computers (Windows 7 and a Mac). It does not pull up in the My Computer area of windows. The GPS just starts up as normal when I plug it into the computer like i've plugged it into the car....no different. I've tried different USB plugs and it's the same issue. The maps work fine and there are no known issues with this GPS.
Is there a way to force it to enter into mass storage mode? Any solutions?
  • What cable are you using? Sounds like a cable issue to me.

    1490t Not Connecting to Computer

Garmin Express, USB Drivers, Windows 7... all up to date.

For several years I have been able to connect this 1490t to this Laptop and installed one or two [Lifetime] map updates. The 1490t seems to be working fine as a stand-alone device. However, it will not connect to my Laptop.

The problem first came up when [October, 2013] I tried to install a map update I was instructed to update to Garmin Express. I have not been able to successfully connect my 1490t ever since that update.

My nuvi 1490T is disconnected from the Laptop and powered off . I then plug it into Laptop running Windows 7-64bit with my original Garmin USB cable and two other cables that all work for connecting my cell phone to the Laptop.

The 1490t then powers on, the 1490t screen shows an image indicating connection to a PC for a few moments then loads maps and goes to the Home Screen.

I do not see any type of Garmin USB/Storage Device in My Computer.

Then I go to My Dashboard and I get this response:

Clicking on "up-to-date" or "Garmin Communicator Plugin FAQ page" links above produce error below:

The following message occurred the first time I removed the SD Card and went thru the connect process, but, I have not been able to reproduce this repeatedly.
With micro SD card removed My Dashboard says:

I put the micro SD card back in and went thru the power off/on/connect process.

Garmin Express shows the following Home Screen at startup:

After selecting one of the Software Updates the following screen is shown:

I ran the Settings/Restore and ran thru the power on/off/connect process; still no device found.

I tried the Master or Hard Reset by touching the lower-right corner while powering up; got a brief 'loading maps' message [too short to actually have loaded maps] then the 'Do you really want to erase all user data?' message and hit YES. It thinks for just 1 second then starts to power up again briefly shows a 'loading maps' message followed by a series of set up questions; Select a locale, language, Register your Product, WARNING, then the Home Screen. Where To still contains all my Address, Go Home address, Recently Found, Favorites. I thought the Hard Reset would delete all that.

I tried to get to a Diagnostics Menu by holding my finger on the upper-right corner of the Volume screen for more than 10 seconds, but, nothing happens.

So, what do I try next in an attempt to get this 1490t connected to my Laptop and update my Lifetime Maps?
  • The first thing I would do is try another computer. That should narrow down whether the problem is in your laptop or your nuvi. If the connect fails on another computer, it could be the USB port has gone bad in your nuvi. The 14xx series is kind of notorious for that problem.

I get the same problem on the Desktop. Thanks for the suggestion; I suppose it might require a service call to get this thing updated.

Any thought on why the Reset doesn't eradicate my Favorites, etc. or why I can't get a Diagnostic Menu from holding a corner of the Volume screen?

I have the exact same problem with my 1490LMT. It has been like this now for 2 years. Everything works fine, charges, etc but will not mount on the computer to update it. Tried different cables, re-soldering the USB port to the motherboard and still has the same issue. I would love to know what the problem is! Its not a cable, driver, etc! Gotta be something bad on the motherboard, I'm just not sure what. I Find it odd everything works and even charges, it just won't mount on the computer. Did a reset and every step I can think of to fix it.
