Problem with Garmin connect & Oregon

Former Member
Former Member
HI!

It doesn't seem to be possible to upload a track from to Garmin Connect website to the Garmin Oregon (450T). While I can export data from my GPS to the website.

It doesn't seem possible to download too a track from the website to put the .gpx file manually into the GPS.

Do you have any clue how to deal with it? I have a race on sunday and I am not able to put the .gpx into my Garmin, wich is pretty annoying..

I'm sorry for the inconvenience if this subject has already been posted but I could'nt find the topics...

Greetings,

Aubry

    Hello Aubry,

I hope someone with personal experience with an Oregon will give better instructions.
I do not have an Oregon so some of this is what I am guessing from the manual.
The track settings are what I use on my old GPSMAP76 and will work the same on your Oregon.

1). Use Garmin Connect to Export the GPX file directly to the GPX folder inside the Oregon (if it has one). OR directly to the micro card (if it has one). OR directly into a folder on your computer and then copy and paste the track into your Oregon as above.

2). See Owners Manual page 5 to navigate the track. I do not know the procedure to pick your saved track but you do want to follow it in the original direction, not reversed and show it on the map. You need to test this part out with a track you make around the block at home.

3). Track Setup page 15 & 27. Track Log > RECORD SHOW ON MAP and you will be able to see if you are on the saved track you are following. Record Method use DISTANCE. Interval use 0.01 MILES. Those settings are for a 100 mile race and will make the Oregon "auto pause" every time you stop moving and not fill the memory with junk. It will not record anything until you move 0.01mi (53 feet) from the last trackpoint. If your race is over 100 miles then set the Interval on 0.02 MILES.

4). Map Setup page 26. I think 'Track Up" works best. Auto Zoom OFF. Then I pull up the Map and zoom in to where I can see some of the track I am following and some detail. I find 200 works best for me. After that every time you show the map it will be at that scale and not jump in and out. Auto Zoom ON is for automotive.

5). Set up the Trip Computer, page 21. The top 2 (white data fields) in the photo are probably okay. I would change "Moving Time" to "Time" which is the total elapsed time since your last "Reset" which you will do just as you start the race. "Moving Avg" is good. On the bottom 2, I would change "Speed" to "Time of Day" and "Max Speed" to whatever else you want.

6). Practice resetting the Trip Data page 21. The Oregon is always recording when it is turned on so the Trip Computer will go to zero on every thing except Elevation when you hit Reset and then the Time will start accumulating again and distance if you move a little etc. There is no Start button because it is always recording.

Navigating a track takes practice so this whole thing might be too much right now but rest assured that if you have the track log set like I suggested and you reset the Trip Computer at the start, then your race will get recorded and you will be able to see your progress on the map and check your distance etc on the Trip Computer.

And don't forget to have fun.

    Hey Don!

    Thanks for the answer!
The problem I have is I can export my sessions from the GPS to the Garmin Connect (map , bpm, mph, etc...) but I can't export a map from the Garmin Connect to the Oregon (Garmin Connect does not recognize the Oregon). It's only one way.

It would not be a problem if I could download the map (.gpx) on my computer and then put it on the Oregon (wich is what I do, except I create the .gpx from another site), but i can't figure how to download the gpx... I can download the .gpx from my activities but no from courses, wich is pretty annoying... The only option with courses is 'send to device' wich does not work for the reason above, and 'share'.

So, if you guys know how to download the .gpx file from the courses, it would be really helpful. Otherwise, I don't think there is something to do until the dev team adds the Oregon (450t at least) into GarminConnect.

(I hope I'm clear enough, English is not my first language.)

    Thanks!

    Aubry

Edit : Thanks for RECORD METHOD : Distance! It's much more helpful, indeed!

    Hello Aubry,

You are welcome and here is the procedure to get a gpx from Connect to your Oregon....I think.

Connect your Oregon to your computer and see if it shows up as a drive GARMIN (?)
The Micro Card should show up as Removable Disk (?)
Expand those to see if there is a folder GPX. If so you can use either one.....I think.

Open Garmin Connect to the track you want to put in your Oregon.
    > Export > GPX > a file pops up down on the bottom left of the screen > click small arrow > Show in Folder > Close GC > a folder named Downloads shows on screen with your file in it. Rename it with a short name > right click > copy > find GPX folder in Oregon or Card > left click > Paste > Done!

Now remove the Oregon, turn it on and see if you can find the track and then follow the previous instructions.
  • That will only work if it is a GPX file to start with and is a track that has been completed on the Device. I have the same problem. We want to export a course that we have mapped out on the Garmin connect back onto the Oregon and the only option is to send to the device. Yet the reply comes back, cannot send to device, even though i've just uploaded tracks from it! Very annoying. Any help would be appreciated

As someone stated earlier, this only works with a "track" created and uploaded to GC. We don't usually need to download these back to the device it came from. It is also possible to "export" "Activities" as gpx files. What isn't possible is exporting "Courses" as gpx files. We also cannot "Send to device" because the Oregon isn't recognized as a Sports device. I use my Oregon on my bike and for hikes. It would be wonderful to send Courses to my Oregon as a Route. If possible, getting a course onto my Oregon as a turn-by-turn route would be ideal. Sites like mapmyride and ridewithgps allow me to export courses I create on those sites as gpx files. I can put these gpx files on my Oregon where they show up as "tracks". I can navigate to "tracks" but a turn-by-turn "route" would be so much more useful!

Turn-by-turn directions will only be possible if you have a routable map loaded on your Oregon.

Are these your own courses you wish to download, or someone else's? The Oregon doesn't recognize courses as a data type, however one option, if you know the route and have a routable map, is to just create a route in Basecamp and send it to your GPS. If you don't have a routable map, you can still draw a route, but you're going to have a lot of intermediate waypoints. You can always download a track and convert to route.
  • Still unable to get data from Oregon 450t into Garmin Connect

I know this is a bit of an old thread - and I think things have changed.

But can anybody help me figure out how to export tracks (with data from my HRM, for example) into Garmin Connect from my Oregon 450t?

I connect it using Garmin Express, but there really aren't any options for the Oregon 450t when it is connected to Garmin Express.

    Thanks!
    Lowell
  • Your Oregon won't sync via Express. You need to manually import your gpx files. I don't believe it will read any other data from your Oregon.
