Incorrect Weather/Temperature source on new Garmin Connect feature

Hi.
I live in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

It's nice that Garmin Connect has included the weather recording on the activity info/summary. However, it has been collecting temperature from the source SBAF, which is an airport in the state of Rio de Janeiro, but way farther than the SBRJ source, a more common airport and closer to the activities most people from Rio post.

The temperature differences between SBAF and SBRJ are pretty high. Therefore I have to keep checking the real temperature in other sites to complement/correct/update my activities' info.

I suggest changing overall weather source for Rio de Janeiro activities from SBAF (Afonsos airport) to SBRJ (Santos Dumont airport). This will benefit the vast majority of Garmin runners in the state.

Also, it would be nice to include the Real Feel or Heat Index info along with the weather conditions. This is a richer variable to express weather conditions for runners than temperature.

Thanks.

    No Solution, Same problem

I have been having the same problem. I live just South of Kalamazoo, MI and on my local runs Garmin Connect pulls data from KBIV which is 50 miles Northwest. KAZO is 5 miles North. Why wouldn't Garmin connect use it? Thanks in advance for a fix to this nice feature.

Same here! I live in Los Angeles but it pulling weather information from San Diego KNFG that is a 120 miles away. They should let you pick the location of the weather source you would like to use.
  • Same problem here. Live in Canada and the weather station used by Garmin is 200 km from my running location. Temperature is out by 10 degrees C (18 deg F) on average.
  • Just remember, this is a user forum. No guaranty or idea if Garmin values the input here. The feedback feature on the Garmin Connect website should probably be your better hope of getting Garmin's attention.

Same problem here, Oslo, Norway. As far as I can see the data seems to be from a source with totally wrong data.
    My GC show this:

Which seems to be collected from the same source as this:
    http://flightaware.com/resources/airport/ENFB/weather

Which is totally wrong according to weather.com, and what I felt during my run :)

  • It's pretty poor. On the rare occasions that the system actually picks up weather for me, it picks it up from EGUO - which is about 150 miles away. The two biggest airports in the UK are closer than that. Stansted is 30 miles away. Cambridge Airport is so close to where I live that my long runs often enclose it.
Well, maybe this will be improved in the shiny new Garmin Connect.

I live a couple miles from CYVR but my weather data is usually collected in KBVS, 90 miles south, not even the same country. I've contacted support and the first responder said she'll escalate the problem to someone more senior but that was over a week ago and my subsequent email has been ignored. Obviously this has been going on awhile. Not a big problem, but the data's inaccurate and useless.

Hey, it's occurred to me this might be due to jumping into the work out as soon as the device reports a lock on satellites, which is usually too early. Maybe this is tied in. I'll check this out and report back.

So much for that idea. I waited an extra 10 min before starting today and still got wrong data. Support tells me it has to do with what weather data is available at time of upload but I'm not buying it. The local airport is one of the busiest in Canada and I'm sure the planes aren't getting their weather info from Burlington.
  • It has nothing to do with where the aircraft are getting their weather data; it has everything to do with where Garmin Connect is getting their weather data. If the service that Garmin Connect uses to get the weather data doesn't know about or gather data from your local airport, you won't see weather information from that local airport on Garmin Connect.

I tried looking at the html/javascript and don't see anything to indicate what service the weather data is being pulled from. I'm guessing that the data is associated with the activity at the time of upload, just like support told you. If this is the case then it will be difficult to find out where it is coming from.

  • Not sure why it matters that much. I frequently encounter significant temp and wind changes all along my rides within just a few minutes depending on my shade, terrain and other such. Even with a weather station smack dab in the middle of my course it would not be an accurate depiction of what I encountered, except for right there as I rode past it.

To me it's one of those things that should be considered a better than nothing type of data.

But for those pulling weather 80 plus miles away, I can understand their concern and frustration.
