Performance Management Charts

There is one feature that I use with other software that Garmin does not currently use which is the ability to display Training Stress Score (TSS) Chronic Training Load (CTL), Acute Training Load (ATL) and Training Stress Balance (TSB) to manage over-training and fitness levels etc. With this feature I would be able to use Garmin Connect exclusively.

As I am currently in training for my first Half Ironman event, this is possible the most important feature for me, and enables me to avoid over training injuries and change my training plans accordingly and to view my fitness peaks are peaking at the appropriate times.

These training loads are based on several different types of TSS that are customizable by the user which are:
- TSS based on normalized power for cycling
- rTSS, running TSS based on Workout time series with pace and elevation data, user threshold pace for run/walk (entered in pace/speed zones)
- sTSS, swimming TSS based on workout moving duration, distance, user threshold speed for swim (entered in speed zones)
- hrTSS, heart rate TSS, Workout time series heart rate data, user threshold heart rate (entered in heart rate zones)
- tTSS, TRIMPS Training Stress Score (tTSS) is based on average heart rate, total duration of the workout and the person's physiological heart rate properties (resting heart rate, threshold heart rate, and maximum heart rate).

  • For products prior to the fenix 5 series (and now some Edge models) the implementation of human performance management in Garmin Connect is pretty patchy.

    ....

Whilst I've logged these issues with product support and the beta team, I'm not expecting them to get fixed anytime soon (they just fixed rowing distance per stroke in 8.35b - it was never right from when it was introduced in December 2015 in 6.24b).

    So...

I had a stab at implementing the performance management charts here as it can be done as a spreadsheet using an export from Garmin Connect...

...but then started investigated Golden Cheetah as it has much richer functionality.

fenix 3=>Garmin Connect=>Training peaks(automatic import)=>Golden Cheetah (manual export from TP)

Everything else works fine, except the last step is manual :(

Is there a way to automate the last step?

I hoped I could get away with just using Garmin Connect and my Fenix 3 and uploaded data from my CompuTrainer sessions, but your comment above ("human performance management in Garmin Connect is pretty patchy.") seems to be a huge understatement.

I have had to downgrade from TrainingPeaks Premium but I am interested in viewing the full gamut of reports in the PMC (TSS/IF TSS/Day (ramp rates) CTL, ATL, TSB etc.) I looked at GoldenCheetah - how does it compare for multi-sport (i.e. adding running and swimming training data, not necessarily a triathlon)?
  • Downloaded and using Golden Cheetah - a bit of a learning curve, but it has exactly what I need at a glance, TSS, CTL, ATL and TSB, plus a ton of functionality I haven't figured out yet

I really would like the new features of the new Fenix 5 Plus or FR645 (over my FR235)... are you guys really telling me that Garmin isn't using any of the higher end training/recovery type features on the Connect platform? It is on the watch ONLY? None of that is used or tracked in any insightful manner on the web/app???

Just the training effect (annerobic and aerobic) scores on a per activity basis, the HRV performance check on a per activity basis... and vo2 max for running?

So essentially with my Strava Prem (handles training and fatigue via HRM data over time)... it does all and more than Garmin Connect would with a Fenix 5...?!?!?

use Tapiriik sync to connect GarminConnect to DropBox, (dropbox is sync'ed to the desktop/laptop) and when you open GC on the Mac/pc, you can get Golden Cheetah to auto scan specific directories to auto add the sessions to Golden Cheetah
  • There is a promo going on during TDF which gets you WKO4 for USD 99,-. I took advantage of it and try to sort things out - this is definitely the most complete solution I've seen so far and due to the large amount of training material available it is a tiny bit more accessible than Golden Cheetah.
  • + 1 For Performance Management Charts

After buying a new Garmin product (Vivosmart 4) and having some trouble with software from another source, I'm looking for a new way to track workouts. Garmin Connect looks pretty nice, and it works with both the Vivosmart and my much older Edge cycling computer. I'm just not sure I can give up TSS and the other PMC features.

DerDembo is spot on. Garmin shouldn't give me this feature to be nice. It should provide it so that I stay with their system.
  • + 1 @Garmin: After 7 years it's time to implement what every athlete needs.

I can't believe that this feature is missing.
