Can same current.gpx be used on different nuvi models

I have just bought a nuvi 285w, can I copy the current.gpx from my old nuvi 260 and copy it to my 285w? My favorites number in the 100's, it would take forever to enter them one at a time.
I have heard you can copy this file to your computer as a back up for your favorites. In the event of a Garmin crash or other electronic disaster, you can reload your Favorites from thie computer file.

You sure can. Garmins new program Express will do it for you, but you can also do it manually. Copy the file current.gpx from your 260 to your PC. Rename it something different, eg temp.gpx, and copy it into the GPX folder on your 285. Reboot your 285 and it will merge the favorites from temp.gpx into the file on your 285. Once the favourites from your 260 show up reconnect your 285 to your PC and delete temp.gpx

I just tried to copy the current.gpx file from my old garmin to my new one and it doesn't seem to work. Is my old garmin too old? It a nuvi 8 series. Any other suggestions?
