Charge Garmin 62stc with batteries in device?

The unit comes with a charger for batteries removed, but can I charge the batteries while they are in the device? Can't find anything in the manual about it.

You can use an external power source. The batteries won't be charged, but aren't drained by the device either.
Having a spare set of (rechargeable) batteries to replace the ones in the device when they are empty is always a good idea...
