How do I remove North America Map that comes with nuvi 2555?

I am not able to locate any map inside the GPS unit even if I were to show
hidden files.

Model: nuvi 2555
Hardware Version: nuvi 25x5 C2 A V5 4GB 64MB TE
Software Version: 7.50
Text Version: 3.30
GPS Firmware: 4.14.10
  • Is there a reason why you want to? But if you do have to they are in the .system folder. To view that you also have to set your PC to show system folders:

  • And the map filename is

    gmapprom.img

That said I would make a backup of all gmapprom.* files before you delete anything.

Thanks for your prompt reply. I did that but there is no gmapprom.img. inside my GPS.
  • You may also need to set your nuvi to mass storage mode then:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable
    7. Explorer will now see all files in ROOT directory and the .System directories.

    Thanks, you are super !

    a. The reason I wanted to delete the map is I did a firmware upgrade.
    b. Then I proceed with map upgrade, and it is not successful which I don't know.

After the above 2 things happened, my GPS will auto shutdown once
    while navigating to my destination.

So I suspect either firmware or map incomplete upgrading issue. Would you be able to advise?

Thanks a lot! You are great!
  • If a hard reset hasn't fixed it then it might very well be a map issue. No need to remove it though, just download it again.

I'm in Singapore and that map is a North America map which I never check on it.
I tried few versions of Singapore map, and all auto shutdown while navigating on the road.
I suspecting maybe map issue of North America that impact the rest.
  • Just be aware that your nuvi probably needs gmapprom.img to work, so if you delete it then your nuvi might not boot at all.
  • More likely is that the Singapore map is causing the issue. I'm pretty sure Garmin doesn't produce a map of Singapore so it's probably locally produced.
  • I suspect you're correct :)
