Etrex 30 trip odometer.

I have noticed that the trip odometer is counting slowly upwards even though it has been sat on a table all day. This morning I did a reset, since then it hasn't moved and now the odo is reading 17.5 Km?

Has anyone seen this before and if so how on earth can I stop it?:confused:
  • That's normal AFAIK though I don't know if 17.5 kms is a reasonable figure. Your GPS is constantly recalculating it's position even when sitting still, and it will never be exactly the same. So if you watch it it will appear to 'wander' and over time this means it records a 'distance moved' even if physically the GPS hasn't moved.

Before I had the 30 I have had and still have, an original Etrex Vista for a lot of years and this has never happened on that. Plus, I have had a TomTom for years and when I have been sat still so has it?

17.5K is a hell of a long way from where I started if I were to try to do a logs days walking and worked out the distance traveled in that time. On a 10 day holiday that would work out to 175Km further that I had actually moved!

    100 miles!!!!! Totally unacceptable.
  • Yes, well I did say that I didn't know if 17.5 kms was 'reasonable' :)

I agree it does seem a lot. Bit of background, when the new Etrex series came out numerous users (never experienced it myself) had what was termed a 'sticky issue' with the GPS locking up at low speeds and the position shown on the screen not changing. Garmin introduced a bit of 'jitter' to help prevent this, and that might very well be why you're getting 17.5 kms!

You won't get that if you're moving. I did a 268 mile walk in June with my Etrex 20 reporting a total of 271 miles IIRC, so a reasonable 'error'.

Thank you for taking the time to explain. I have just tried phoning the company I bought it from, but they are closed and don't say when they are open again? I will try again in the New Year.

I hope that you have a very Happy New Year and a good 2013.
