The 'contacts' feature of the 655t

Hi;

Does anyone know how, while out in the field, to change the name of a contact on the 655T? When I get a notification that another 655t user has been located, that other user is identified simply as 'name' (and then a number, IIRC, but I can't be sure, because I've only experimented with one other 655t user) and a distance. This doesn't seem particularly useful to me, particularly if I were in the field with multiple 655t users. I would like to be able to change 'name #' to something more sensible.

Also, is there a setting that identifies the 655t one is carrying; that is, to name it in some way? (e.g. whdaffer655t) and have that be the identifier that comes up on the other user's 655t when they get notification of my location? This would also solve my problem.

TIA
whdaffer

I don't have a 655T but just downloaded/looked at the manual. On page 10 there's a section titled "Editing Contacts". Does that work?

FYI the screenshots on the 655T features page implies that contacts can be named.

    Thanks for the reply.

I've investigated that screen. Unfortunately, none of the items you can choose allow you to change the name of the 'contact.'

    The items are:

    View Map
    Poll Location
    Clear current track
    Delete contact
    Project Waypoint
    Elevation Plot

In fact, the directions are wrong. In no case, when you 'select an item', are you presented with the checkmark icon (which seems to be Garmin's equivalent of the 'enter' key, i.e. it's something you hit after you've typed something in, or accepted their default).

It seems that 'selecting an item' is the last step in the process of interacting with this branch in the 655t software.

I agree, the webpage you quote certainly suggests that you can name the contacts, I just haven't found out how to do it yet.

My only suggestion is to go through every menu you can think of (or all of them) looking for such a feature. Either that or contact Garmin or wait for another 655T user to reply.

Garmin has a reputation for "skimpy" manuals. Just because the manual doesn't mention something it doesn't mean you can't do it. You might also Google for a Rino 6xx specific forum etc.

As regards your first suggestion: I have gone through every screen.
As regards your second suggestion: That's what I'm doing at this moment, contacting the user community of 655t users to see if they've solved this problem.

Regarding your final suggestion: Already done. That's why I'm posting to this forum.

As regards your comment that Garmin has a reputation for 'skimpy' manuals: I'm forced to agree. This is the third Garmin product I've bought and I can only say that, since they seem to have a lock on particular markets, they feel no need to produce quality documentation. I find it very irksome that I have to do google searches in order to find out whether a product has a particular capability, particularly when the logic of the situation suggests that it should. That sort of stuff should be at my fingertips, not at the end of a long chain of google searches.

Which means, when you think about it, that they hold their user community in rather low regard.
