Edge 705 Won't Read SD Card?

I just downloaded City Navigator North America NT to the SD card in my Edge 705 and have the map selected in Settings but when I go to view the map on the unit all it shows are the major highways, no detail at all. When I zoom in it shows nothing at all. The unit has the latest firmware also. What am I doing wrong here?
  • Have a look under System>Map>Map visibilty (page 30 of the manual) as I suspect your settings need adjusting, try the Zoom setting first.

I must have a different version. My Edge 705 has Settings>Map and then a "detail option", where it is set to "most" detail. No detail at all though.

Just guessing here but it sounds like your 705 is not reading the SD card. It sounds like it had defaulted to the factory Basemap.
What size SD card? My 705 works best with a 2 or 4GB card.
What software did you use to install the map to the card?
Explore the card. It should have a folder > garmin > with a file named > gmapsupp.img > about 1,500,000 KB in the folder and another file named > gmapsupp.unl > about 1 KB.
Did you unlock the map thru Garmin?
  • I thought that initially but the OP says the map is selected in Settings

I have a 4GB card. I downloaded the map to the SD card via the Garmin website (Garmin Connect?). The SD card has a 485MB file named gmapsupp.IMG and a also a file named gmapsupp.unl but it has zero KB. I also wasn't aware I had to unlock the map. Maybe it didn't download correctly?

Sorry, my error, was thinking of the Edge 800

That's possible, you could try the download again. Just confirm though that it's in a folder named Garmin on the card and it does actually show under Settings>Map>Map name?

Incidentally all my unlock files (those ending in .unl) are 1KB in size.

OK looks like I need to redownload and unlock. I'll let you know if it works. Thanks guys!
  • Actually you can (re)create a .UNL file yourself. It's just a plain text file containing the unlock code for your map product. That should be viewable in the maps tab of your myGarmin account.

A .UNL file looks like this
