USB cable and Oregon 550

When I use the USB cable (original; included with the GPSr) to attach my Oregon 550 to my computer USB port, my GPSr powers up, initially appears (on the GPSr screen) like it is going to display as an external device, then switches and displays the main menu (just like it does if I power it up using batteries). It never shows up as an external device on my computer.

In the past, it occasionally would do this. I would unplug the cable and plug it in again, and it normally would then correctly power up as an external device. Now, no matter how often I unplug it, my GPSr powers up and always displays the main menu.

With my old GPSMAP 60CSx, this wouldn't be a big problem, because the 60CSx had a menu that allowed me to choose whether I wanted the cable-attached GPSr to display the main menu or be treated as an external device. The Oregon 550 doesn't have such a menu option (as far as I can see).

Any suggestions?
