Motivational Awards/Achievements

I think a good motivational feature of Garmin Connect, on top of your own personal goals, would be to unlock awards for reaching certain milestones in your training, whether that be running, cycling, or other Connect compatible sports. Take running for example. Awards could automatically be given for things like completing your first 5 miles in one go, right up to things like successfully completing a marathon or even an ultramarathon, making sure that everyone at every level always has something to inspire them when they train. Similar awards could be given for completing cycling based achievements. Awards for tallied distance totals would also inspire people and motivate them to go out and train, thus making every session count. Awards that are given for reaching time/speed milestones in each sport would add an exciting element to any training session, and could potentially reveal undiscovered future talent. There are lots of ways that this could be implemented alongside (not instead of) the personal goal system, and would ensure that everyone had something to aim for.

    I started running and training last summer and got a Garmin forerunner 10 for Christmas. I transferred all my record that I noted in an agenda to the Garmin Connect. I discovered that I was close to 200km running total.

    Being a gamer, I was almost hoping for an "achievement" to be unlocked. Unfortunately, nothing happened when I got to 200km. But I think, the idea is worth being explained and seriously proposed.

    So, for any non-gamer, an achievement is like a Scout's merit badge. If you do something particular, you earn the badge. If you perform certain tasks, you get a different badge. I started thinking about what could be some examples and maybe I got a little carried away but I was able to list quite a few. I live in Canada so I got mainly ideas about north american landmarks but more international could be added.

    Here is a list of what I had in mind :

    1 run or 1 swim or 1 cycle --> Got off the couch.
    first run --> Got shoes
    first cycle --> Got wheels
    first swim --> Got wet

    5k run in -10C(or below) --> Iceman
    5k cycle in -10C(or below) --> Yeti

    Cycle 2 days in a row -->
    Cycle 5 days in a row --> Big Wheel

    1 run, 1 swim and 1 cycle in a week --> (Three items of the triathlon)
    1 run, 1 swim and 1 cycle in a day -->

    total swim, total cycle and total run of a week = (ironman distances) --> IronWeek

    3 run in a week --> Sandals
    3 cycle in a week --> Training wheel
    3 swim in a week --> Speedo
    4 run in a week --> Running shoes
    4 cycle in a week --> Geared wheel
    4 swim in a week --> Sharkskin suit
    5 run in a week --> Silver shoes
    5 cycle in a week --> Silver wheel
    5 swim in a week --> Silver suit
    6 run in a week --> Golden shoes
    6 cycle in a week --> Golden wheel
    6 swim in a week --> Golden suit
    7 run in a week --> Diamond shoes
    7 cycle in a week --> Diamond wheel
    7 swim in a week --> Diamond suit

    20k run in a week --> Shopper
    30k run in a week --> Traveler
    40k run in a week -->
    50k run in a week -->
    75k run in a week -->
    100k run in a week --> Mailman

    20k cycle in a week --> Pizza Deliverer
    50k cycle in a week --> Milk man
    100k cycle in a week --> RVer
    200k cycle in a week --> Freight Truck
    500k cycle in a week --> Locomotive

    5k swim in a week --> Raft
    10k swim in a week --> Pirogi
    25k swim in a week --> Boat
    35k swim in a week --> Cruise ship
    50k swim in a week --> Frigate

    all swim = Bering strait --> Bering strait
    all swim = NYC to France --> Trans-Atlantic
    all cycle + all run = Los Angeles to NYC --> Across the USA
    all cycle + all run = Florida's east coast -->
    all run = Boston to NYC --> (two cities with major marathon races)
    all swim = lake Michigan length -->
    all swim = Havana (Cuba) to Key west --> (too political?)

    1 run over 5k with pace < 6m/km --> Squirrel
    1 run over 5k with pace < 5m/km --> Rabbit
    1 run over 5k with pace < 4m/km --> Antelope
    1 run over 5k with pace < 3m/km --> Cheetah

    1 cycle over 10k with pace < 4m/km --> Scooter
    1 cycle over 10k with pace < 3m/km --> Chopper
    1 cycle over 10k with pace < 2m/km --> Sport bike
    1 cycle over 10k with pace < 1m/km --> Superbike

    1 swim over 1k with pace < 12m/km --> Goldfish
    1 swim over 1k with pace < 10m/km --> Dolphin
    1 swim over 1k with pace < 8m/km --> Tigershark
    1 swim over 1k with pace < 6m/km --> Sailfish

    Those are just what came to me after a few minutes, I didn't consider elevation or finding a name for all the badges yet. I might also have irrelevant ideas about swimming being a bad swimmer. but it's more to give an idea of what it could look like.

    I believe that such badges would add some sort of "next objective" for some of the user. It adds a notion of goal and tends to encourage to push yourself to the next level and get that badge to show off to your contacts/friends.

    Could this be implemented ? Pretty pretty please ?
  • Anoher awsome thing would be to display official race medals.
