Connect has stopped working for me

Up until Oct 23rd, Communicator was working fine. But as of Oct 27th, I now get the message:

No devices found.
Please connect your device now and try again.
**********

My 305 is connected to the computer the same way it always is (to the USB port using the Garmin dock. The 305 completely charged, so I know the USB port is working (and I assume the Garmin dock also)..

I tried installing the latest version of Communicator and updated the USB drives to the 2.3.1 release. I've tried using both Firefox and IE8 but both browsers give the same message that they cannot find an attached Garmin device.

I've tried rebooting and I've tried restarting both browsers with no luck.

I am running WinXP SP3. I checked in the System Device Manager but don't see any warnings or missing devices there. Under the entry "Garmin Devices" I see "Garmin USB GPS".

Anyone have any other ideas or a clue as to what the problem might be?

    I have a Win7 laptop, so decided to try and upload my hike data via that machine. But I get the same "No devices found" when I plug in the USB dock to the laptop.

    It would appear that the USB cable or the dock unit has gone bad.

    Has anyone encountered this before?

    More weirdness, sigh. I found a USB cable that fit the Garmin dock and tried it out. When plugged into the Win7 laptop, the Garmin COnnect webpage recognizes the 305 device and I am able to upload data. BUT when I switch the USB cable to the old WinXP desktop machine (and try various USB ports), Garmin Connect still can' find any devices. I tried clearing cahce and restarting the browser (an old version of FF) but it did not help. I also tried in IE8 on the WinXP machine but no joy with that browser either.
