GPSMAP 62S Shutting down for no reason

My GPSMAP 62S will shut down randomly for no reason. This happens with rechargeable batteries and Alkaline batteries. I'm running the current software version 4,50. What can be done to fix this?
  • Same situtation here. Started doing that AFTER upgrading recently to v4.4 and continues with v4.5. In my case it appears to be connected to having BirdsEye Satellite Images turned on AND the display in "Battery Save" mode. It also shut down when trying to use Sight 'n Go. I might add, I've done both a soft reset (via menus) and a "hard" reset (power on while holding enter+page).

  • Hoffarta... What you described kinda rings a bell here although, its not the first keystroke that shuts it down. Yesterday I woke it up and using FIND>RECENT FINDS>selected WP, ENTER and it shut down. As I described in my response above, my shutdown seems to occur when I have batter save enabled and BirdsEye enabled. Usually, my 62s just shuts down while its asleep (won't wake up).
  • Does anyone from Garmin ever read the forum? I sure would like to hear their input on this.

It would not do any good if they did. I have been trading emails for over a week with Garmin about this 4.5 problem. They have told me that they have not seen this problem with other units. (Obviously not checking this forum then!) In one email, they blamed the problem on GPX files loaded from GSAK. Their solution...start using OpenCaching.com. Yeah, right. The dialog continues. I have removed all files other than factory and the unit is still crashing. I love Garmins, but this total lack of support and the occasional crap firmware updates really burn me.

Hi, I'm happy (and not) knowing that many other Garmin GPSMAP62s users have the same issue with their units.

I bouth my device earlier in february this year and noticed this bug happened in September on my unit. For me, it happened after a trek in a huge rain. I first thought it was a hardware failure because of the rain and then noticed that the use case to produce the bug was almost always the same.

I go to the geocaches menu, select a geocache, then I select the direct routing mode from the trip computer menu and it automatically goes back to the map screen. If I click on the "menu" button just after that, the screen fade off and the device shut down. But if I move a little bit the arrow from the map screen and then click on the "menu" button it will not happen. The use case will produce this bug in almost 90% of the time with my unit. I also found other use case but less frequents.

I'm using the last firmware version (4.7 I think). Does anybody had any answers from Garmin ? Is it a known bug? I had found other users from the Geocaching forums reporting the exact same issue when going back from the trip computer menu. I will probably try to contact Garmin for a replacement before the end of my guaranty but if it is a software bug as I think it is, it will not help changing the device.

I posted something directly to their Technical Support people a few days ago, and haven't heard back yet.

I finally found a workaround. It is a bug with version 4.50 and if you downgrade to the firmware 4.40 it should solve the issue. For me it did.

The workaround has been posted here. http://forums.groundspeak.com/GC/index.php?showtopic=302541&st=0&gopid=5147081&#entry5147081

WARNING : you may lose some data such as profiles when downgrading.

Go to this webpage http://garmingpsmap.wikispaces.com/Versions and download version 4.40 of the firmware. Plug in your Garmin device to your computer and open the downloaded file with Garmin WebUpdater software. You will proceed to the firmware update and then reboot your device and follow the steps.

GARMIN must be aware of this bug and should communicate more with their customer. It's really a bad point to them.

    Nicolas.
  • As I noted early in this thread, I first experienced the "shut down" issue after upgrading to 4.4 in September, I believe. It continues (and is still present) after upgrading to 4.5 a couple of weeks later. I did notice on http://www8.garmin.com/support/collection.jsp?product=010-00868-01
mention of a 4.52 "beta"...perhaps the "fix" will be there.
    Unit Software
◦* Beta Software: GPSMAP 62/78, Ver. 4.52, Beta as of Oct 19, 2012, Download
*Although this software is believed to be reliable, it has not yet been released for production and should be used at your own risk."

I have also experience the same problem with my 62ST, I contacted Garmin Australia Technical Support three days ago and recieved a reply today suggesting to perform a hard reset, ensure all software updates are up-to-date and if still no luck to send the unit in for service if it was still under warranty.

My unit is out of warranty so I will try and perform the roll back and see what happens. I also noticed the problem after upgrading to V4.4 intermittently however after updating to V4.5 it happens everytime I switch from the Trip Computer.

This was explained to Garmin Tech Support and I am dissapointed they are not aware of the problem.

I am sorry I did not read this thread prior to my reply to them, I would have pointed it out to them.

Do Garmin read these Threads ????

I can confirm that rolling back the software to V4.4 has solved the shutting down issue all the time.

I have also replied back to Garmin Australia pointing to this thread.

  • Interesting because mine was fine with 4.3 and started doing the shut down when I upgraded to v4.4! And of course, it still does it with 4.5.

You are correct FRENSICPIC, we could replicate the shutting down in V4.4 yesterday however very intermittent and no particular pattern.

We have rolled back to V4.3 now.
