Device will only hold 1 map at a time even with an 8gb SD card

I bought a Garmin Nuvi 310 deluxe a few years ago, I want to travel Europe again so have done the following
gone onto my account with Garmin and updated the software on my device (I had to remove all the old stuff which I have on my computer)
downloaded to my computer the updated map for Europe which is unlocked
accessed Basecamp on my computer and used the Installmap to install the map of Europe to my SD card (file size is 3.19gb so have plenty of space)
After a few hours it finished but my device cannot see the map.
Have read lots of forums and messages on the internet for assistance - I have created a folder in the route of my sd card and called it Garmin, from here the files were stored. Yes I have the correct .IMG file but all I have is the map I put on my device.
I tried an experiment by selecting just a part of the UK so that the transfer time would be short and that worked, it came up on my device, so I then went to add all of the UK but all it has done is delete the first small map which was the Edinburgh area and replaced it with another small part not all of the UK.
I have lots of space on the 8gb card so why can I not have all of Europe in one go.
Maybe it will be less stressful if I just stay at home?
Can anyone help please

    As far as i know, the max .img size the Nuvi 310 can handle is 2Gb. So try keeping the mapsize around 1.9Gb on the SD card.

    u can install the UK on the internal memory of the Nuvi 310, on the 2013.2 the size is 216Mb that becomes a gmapprom.img (Main map)

    On the SD card can only be one gmapsupp.img (supplemental map) file, if u make other mapset, the first one will be overwrite.

    The size of the map shouldn't be an issue, but the map for later models needs to be in a folder named Map, try that and see if it works.

    On the Nuvi 3xx maps are stored in the Garmin folder on the device as gmapprom.img. on SD also in a Garmin folder, but named gmapsupp.img.

    Actually, if u do not create the folder on the SD card (empty card) Map instal, Mapsource or BC will create a garmin folder it self.

    Ah, OK, it's not one that uses the map folder then, thought it might be worth a shot. Garmin show the CN EU map as compatible with the 310 so it must (should) work somehow :confused:

    Maybe the OP simply didn't select it? Should be listed in Tools>Settings>Map>Map info (or something like that) and there should be a check mark next to the map (if it's shown).
