Edge 500 dead after upload

I went for a ride today after a number of months absence due to health reasons and it was grand to get into the saddle again, I had charged up my trusty Garmin Edge 500 before the ride and it worked perfectly as it always has done. When I got home I plugged it into my computer and fired up the website which could not find the device, but a note appeared saying I HAD to update the software, it also said I needed to download Garmin Updater - okay, new stuff, so I download the updater and plugged in my Edge. The Updater found it fine and recognized the model, so I clicked the update button. Off it went and some time later it claimed all was fine and to disconnect it and turn it on. I did. The Edge said it was validating the update, then it was loading it or something, and there were progress bars that progressed fine. All seems great. It completed without error and turned itself off. So I quit the Updater and plugged it back in to the browser and fired up the Garmin website and logged in - there was all my stuff, but again the Edge was not recognized.

I unplugged the Edge and pressed the power button, the word "Garmin" appeared for a few seconds and then the screen went blank. In short - it will NOT turn on. I plugged it back into the USB cable and the word "Garmin" appears again for a few seconds, which then the screen goes blank - well, no text or any display, but it is glowing with a backlight.

In short - it is totally dead. I cannot access the information stored from today's ride and I cannot get it to work at all. I do not know how to reset it, reload it or anything - most upset, very annoyed.

Any ideas please anyone - I rely on this thing.

Thanks - Lawrence
  • I don't have any answers for you, but I have seen posts here where some claim to press several of the buttons at the same time which causes a master reset. Also, if you still have access to the files on the device through the usb, then other posts have claimed to be able to revert to the original software. I know that trying to search this forum can be painful, but persistence does pay off.

However my best recommendation is to call or email Garmin support.
