Garmin Nuvi 1300 Not being recognized by computer

I plugged in the GPS to the laptop to register it and it says "Gathering information (this might take several seconds)".
It has been like this for HOURS!! and it is just stuck there.

There could be numerous reasons so it's difficult to diagnose 'long distance' :)

Common errors are connecting via a USB hub (often doesn't work) or problems with your firewall/virus settings.

Garmin have also produced a FAQ called why isn’t my device recognised which may or may not help you.

You might also want to check you have up to date drivers
