Power Metrics - GC vs WKO+

Hope someone can help me, I've looked around the forum and can't find the answer.

I upload my ride to GC and also to Training Peaks/WKO+ but I've noticed that there are some differences in the reported Power numbers and can't quite figure out why. I use a Powertap Power Meter and have a screenshot attached of the differences I'm seeing comparing one to the other.

Would anyone be able to explain why there is a difference? Just doesn't make sense to me at all. Normalised Power, Average Power, TSS and IF all differ between the two and I'm more inclined to trust WKO+ but its the same download so there shouldn't be any difference in any case?

I am a beginner as far as training with Power is concerned. And there is a lot to take in already without trying to figure out these issues too.

Thanks,

Dex.

Perhaps one is a mean average and the other a mode average? If I get this right then.......
Mean average = total power output / time
Mode average = most common power output
    So...
    Mean average of 1,2,3,3,3,4,3,3,2,1 = 2.5
    Mode average of 1,2,3,3,3,4,3,3,2,1 = 3

Consider the differences if you stop for a nature break during a 1hr ride. Although you may have output a consistent 300W while pedaling, your mean average will be less because of the time not spent pedaling. In this example you might consider a mode average a better representation of your actual effort.
  • Thanks for that.

I had an answer to this same question on my blog from one of the guys at Training Peaks, about an hour ago, and he suggests that in the Garmin I change my System>Data Recording>Data Averaging and change the Power and Cadence to "include zeros". Currently its excluding zeros, so if I freewheel its not included in the GC upload but it is included in WKO+, and that is the most likely explanation for the differences.

I'm fairly sure that will be the most likely answer but will check that out tomorrow and let you know.

Thanks for taking the time to reply :-)

  • Pleased to report that the "fix" I outlined above has resolved the issue, did a ride this morning and the numbers in both GC and WKO+ are the same. Hopefully this might be useful to others if they come across the same problem.

    Thanks,
