Computer not recognising Edge 800

My computer tells me it does not recognise the USB connection (Garmin Edge 800) as the device has failed. I have re-booted the computer, Garmin off / on and tried again. Still same problem. Advice then is to change the device! The Garmin is working ok in all functions when nor connected to the computer. I last down loaded activities last week and it was all ok. any ideas?
