Cannot Map Highways

I am sure this is a very easy question, but so far I have not been able to find an easy answer. When using connect.garmin site to create a course, I am unable to select a highway. The connect.garmin site wants to force the course to be on back roads.

What do I need to need to be able to select highways in creating a course using connect.garmin site?

Here are the results of my tests:

Using TOPO U.S. 24K West map still provides turn-by-turn directions.

You will still get turn-by-turn directions with Bike Route Toaster. If you have course points, you will also get a small message, such as “Turn Right” in the center of your display. If you do not want this, you can uncheck “Add Course Points at Junctions” and use “Track Points” to create your course.

It does not matter if you alternate between “Stay on Road” being enabled or not when creating a course using connect.garmin. It will still navigate and provides the turn-by-turn directions fine. The same is true for when you use Bike Route Toaster and change between using Google and OSM as the data source, although OSM sometimes can throw a strange turn in.

After testing of connect.garmin, Basecamp and Bike Route Toaster, I would have to say the winner is Bike Route Toaster. It has trails that you can add to a route, which the others do not. You can also easily turn off “avoid highways.” It downloads an elevation profile to your device that then displays a dot on the profile to reflect your current position. It also downloads a complete cue sheet. You can adjust the flat and hill speeds of your virtual partners. You can also set early warnings and it is easy to insert points and to adjust the map.

Hope this is helpful and saves time for others with questions who come across this thread.

Update: Though Bike Route Toaster is still my top pick, I did find a negative. There does not appear to be a way to look at the elevation and determine that exact location as it appears on the course, other than estimating. If someone has an answer, that would be great! Here is the workaround I have found. Using Firefox, from the Bike Route Toaster Summary tab to select to Download the file in tcx format. In the popup, I select open with Basecamp and it automatically imports it. You can then double click the route name in the left panel, select Graph tab and move along the elevation line and the map will show your exact location.
  • Thanks. That works in IE 9 & 10 as well.

Just bought the 810, tried to plan a few courses and I was disappointed to find out it wont let me choose the highway. Now, almost all routes here involve the highway at some point, thus garmin connect is useless to me. Disabling "stay on roads" sucks, because then I have to spend much more time plotting the route (and undo gets harder). Can we get any official response whether this can be fixed?
