I'll be the devil's advocate here and ask how you'd expect your device to know what you're wearing at any given time... and would you really want it too??
SportTracks already provides for this on your Windows PC (works fine in a VM environment on the Mac too) and Runningfreeonline offer much of what people want online.
It's not for the device to know, it's for personal reference and added after activity upload. Very useful for keeping track of shoe mileage acroos a range of shoes.
Cool. I'm a newbie re the whole online tracking possibilities, still a bit hung-up on the big brotherish implications! Yes, that would be useful information and it does make sense to roll it into your wo management software.

That only really applies if you choose to use an internet medium for data analysis where you effectively give away control of your data. One reason to use an on-PC medium if those privacy issues are of concern

This is why I'd love to see a sharing by invitation only setting in Garmin Connect. I'm frankly surprised no one seems to share my interest in this, per my earlier feature request, and are fine with broadcasting their work outs to anyone who cares to look.
This feature was actually listed under "Coming soon" at http://connect.garmin.com/help/whatsnew not so long ago. But that got removed for some reason (along with tracking of weather I think).
(The Swedish translation of that page still says gamin connect is updated about once a month with new features. That's very far from true :) )
My iPhones app for GPS mapping and tracking my workouts is called iSmoothRun (one-time cost of $5). It uploads automatically to FB, Twitter, DailyMile, RunKeeper, etc. It tracks equipment and gear also. You go into the option from Settings, click the "+" button, then type in a name description of the gear. I use "Red Pair Saucony Glide4," "Trail Shoes," "Kayak," and "Trek Bike" for my gear.
When you go to start your activity, there are a 4 scroll fields. One is Activity Type (make sure it is on Running, Trail Running, Hiking, Walking, MTB, Cycling, Kayaking, etc.). Another scroll field is weight (I presume for more accurate caloric calculation). Another is workout (Free, Customized Interval, Distance, Calories, Run/Walk, Time). The third is Playlist. Self-explanatory I hope. Its what music you want played during the workout.
The other scroll field is "Equipment." So however many miles you log in that particular activity workout, those miles are added to the running calculator under that particular piece of gear.
