How to get total elevation on new course?

I'm new to Garmin Connect and love the ability to create courses on the web before even riding them. I am wondering if it is possible to see the total elevation gain for a new course before riding it? There is the elevation chart, and you can see the current elevation for any point on the course, but I do not see any total elevation gain shown. I'd like to be able to design a new course and now the total gain before riding it, if possible. Thanks!

    same problem....

I have the same problem and when doing my new courses I'm not getting an elevation profile during the ride, just a flat line!
    Anyone....?

I have this problem as well. The total elevation gain on the course reads "---", but there is clearly an elevation graph when editing the course which seems correct. Why is this not transferred to my device, and why is this elevation data not considered in the totals on the site?
  • The easiest solution is to use something like bikeroutetoaster.com instead of GC. It'll give you the total climb and descent 'as you go' in the Summary tab.

Its much simpler, and will export directly to your Garmin device.

I've used it for years successfully.

The easiest solution would be for Garmin to fix the product we've all bought into.

    It doesn't work,

I create a course for the weekends ride, My Friend asks me how much climbing there will be, I say.. "no idea, its not telling me"

Garmin please fix, or give us the option to export to file

I imagine tho that no one from Garmin will ever read or respond to these problems.
  • I agree this should be fixed. The weird thing is a few of my created courses do show the elevation gain. These were made with the course creator and not saved from previous runs/rides. Things like this keep me from using GC fulltime. I'm always going to Training Peaks or Bike Toaster to create routes.

This is ridiculous, Garmin not responding here or to direct contact. When I create a new course on GC the elevation profile is there. Once I save the course it dissappears and no summary overall gain loss data. Other courses (like Wiggle Jurassic beast) have a summary of elevation gain/loss but no profile. This has got nothing to do with my device (Edge 705) since I haven't uploaded or ridden the routes yet. Please fix this Garmin.

I just found this issue as well... Did a quick homebrew fix with excel:
    go into Map Source
select the route and go to route properties
    select all the data
    insert into excel
my elevation data was in the "D" column... so I selected a blank column to the right of all the data.
To find elevation gain- I put =IF(D1<D2,D2-D1,"") in a blank column
To find elevation loss- I put =IF(D1>D2,D1-D2,"") in a blank column

This quick if formula checks to see if the newer D2 data is higher or lower than the previous, if it is higher, excel will subtract D2 from D1 (giving you the elevation change), otherwise the "" will leave the cell blank.
At the end of the data- you then simply SUM the column to find the total elevation gain or loss.

*quick note: Excel doesn't like the value "619ft" as "ft" is not a number. You can remove the "ft" by copying the value into notepad, then copy that back into excel and separate based on "a space" in the special paste option.

Hope this helps! And keep on exploring!
  • I agree. Really frustrating. We are all Garmin brand ambassadors by using the equipment, so brand support by Garmin would be appreciated.
