What happened to "Moving time"?

Former Member

It appears that Garmin has removed the "Moving time" and "Moving Pace" data points. Any one know what the reason was for this latest dumb move?

And was this previously announced or was it an ad-hoc move by some intern?

Garmin Help file is still referring to these fields:

What is the difference between the various fields listed under Timing within Garmin Connect?
05/25/2011

Garmin Connect processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields:

* Moving Time: includes only the time you were moving
* Time: includes time moving and time not moving (if Auto Pause is off)
* Elapsed Time: includes time between when timer is started, stopped, and reset (includes Auto Pause or manual stoppage of the timer)

* Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity
* Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause)
* Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed throughout the duration of an activity

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

I think I read when they released moving time initially, it was available for all workouts including historical ones.

I really hope they return it soon. I've been all over their facebook page trying to drum up support.

Garmin - please listen to your customers!!!
  • bring back Moving time, please!

    please bring back Moving time!!!

i just did a personal 1/2 marathon for fun and half way around, as it was hot, i popped into a small village Post Office to get some drink, and got stuck behind 3 people posting awkward parcels, lol, so i was queuing in there for 20 mins!

"No problem", i thought, i can use my trusty "moving time".

    NOPE!

where has it gone! please bring it back. Why would you want to REMOVE functionality???

on an equally disappointing note, now i am signed in....
I'm on my second garmin now (first a 310 that failed after 4months and now using a 210 (over 18months old i think)...
i even bought a newer teal 210 for the better half for last xmas), and i was hoping the "fail behaviours" would have been ironed out by now with properly rewritten firmware. Fat chance, my wifes still turns itself on mysteriously, without asking (while not being used or worn) so she has to second guess it all the time, and charge it just before a run to be sure. Turn it off with normal use of the buttons? yeah right, in your dreams. We've had to figure out an awkward way of turning it off properly which seems to work, but it is awkward and on my wife's watch takes twice as long as mine.

does your 210 turn itself off when you attach the USB? sometimes yes - which is really annoying, sometimes no, it's great trying to "trust" a gadget that seems to behave in odd and unpredictable ways. i love my Garmin but only when it works properly.

this all seems so sloppy, these are expensive units and i complained last year about the "turning itself on" problem then, and it's still happening in new versions sold recently. come on. very disappointing.
  • Can I also ask ...

... for 'Moving Time' to be put back!

I read that blog entry, and it sounded very silly to me. There was never any confusion about what 'Moving Time' might mean. Like others, I've depended on this calculation to determine how much actual exercise I've been doing. Never liked 'Auto Pause', and also never liked having to turn it on/off after changing it once. 'MovingTime' with 'Time' and 'Elapsed Time' gave us everything we needed ...

    So why remove the thing????????????????????

Another stupid move to add to all the others.
  • Just another user chiming in to say I found the Moving Time very useful and I don't like the fact that it has been removed. Please return this field to Garmin Connect.

Add another unhappy customer. I have months of training data that has just become less useful. As a FR210 owner, I don't have Auto Pause functionality. For anyone who runs around suburbia there are inevitable pauses at street crossings, traffic lights, etc and the ability to segregate this time is crucial for performing meaningful back-to-back comparisons.

Can't help but think it is a marketing exercise to "encourage" people to stump up more for higher cost devices although such a strategy alienates existing customers.

And did I miss it or was there nothing posted about this change in the Garmin.Connect Announcements forum??

Email customer support to get their attention. They need to know how many people this has adversely affected. That's the best way to get their attention.

Nice to know that they were listening and were flexible enough to change their previous decision.
