What happened to "Moving time"?

Former Member

It appears that Garmin has removed the "Moving time" and "Moving Pace" data points. Any one know what the reason was for this latest dumb move?

And was this previously announced or was it an ad-hoc move by some intern?

Garmin Help file is still referring to these fields:

===========
What is the difference between the various fields listed under Timing within Garmin Connect?
05/25/2011

Garmin Connect processes the data of an activity in many ways to help you fully evaluate your activity data.

Below are the more in depth descriptions of various time and pace/speed fields:

* Moving Time: includes only the time you were moving
* Time: includes time moving and time not moving (if Auto Pause is off)
* Elapsed Time: includes time between when timer is started, stopped, and reset (includes Auto Pause or manual stoppage of the timer)

* Average Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed for entire duration of an activity
* Moving Pace/Speed: Pace or Speed that only includes time spent moving (does not include Auto Pause)
* Best Pace/Speed: Best Pace or Speed throughout the duration of an activity

Being aware of the differences between the various timing fields will assist you in utilizing them fully in evaluating your training.

Also super sad about moving time being removed. Didn't realize until after my run today where I actually had to stop a ton due to hills =/

Anyone know how to turn on this "auto-pause" they speak about on a 110? =(

Even more disappointed now... found out autopause feature doesn't exist on the 110. Now I'm missing all my moving time data AND I can't take advantage of the autopause feature for a modified moving time. What gives Garmin??? =(

<go to specs and see the following:
Auto Pause® (pauses and resumes timer based on speed): no>

Hmmm. Wonder why I haven't received any email notifications for the posts accumulating in this thread?

I logged MOVING TIME on Sunday as 1:51:12. But today, the new TIME field shows 1:54:00. So what happened to the missing 2:48???

I had a MOVING SPEED of 3.9mph. NOW instead, I have an AVERAGE SPEED of 3.8mph.

I had a MOVING PACE of 15:23. Now, I have an AVERAGE PACE of 15:46!.

I have had auto pause enabled since I got the 305. As you can see from the numbers above, it did not help get the right times!

I had a setting of auto pause when moving less than 0.4 m/h. I am not sure how I arrived at this figure but it grew out of some tech back and forth long ago.

I use auto-pause on the road but have always disabled it when the mountain biking where there are steep wooded climbs and intermittent signal loss triggers auto-pause when was still moving.

Hmm. When I zoom in on my routes, I am noticing that there are too many places where the signal has been lost for short periods of time (even in relatively open areas), causing the Garmin software to draw an assumed line between the last good position and the position where the device picked up the satellite signal again. I wonder if auto pause is the culprit here?

I wrote a note to Garmin support about this and got this reply:

I am sorry but the Moving Time & Moving Pace have been removed during the last update to Garmin Connect. So basically, TS, go put a suggestion in the box and go away. Not helpful at all.

If they had given proper announcement that they were going to do this, then maybe we could have had time to give them sufficient feedback to make them reconsider. Telling me to put a suggestion up to restore removed functionality is pretty lame!

I'm not going to disagree or agree with that comment, but I am going to encourage you strongly to do it. If enough people make their views clear about wanting this put back, they will do it eventually. (Of course if fewer people complain about it than seem to have complained about the fields you want put back, you might be out of luck...)

"Auto-pause" is not a function on my Forerunner

Pretty disappointing from Garmin in terms of customer service and engagement, as well as IT change management.

For many users, including me with my 210, Auto-Pause is not a function on their device, so the moving time feature on GarminConnect was critical.

If it took a few users complaining that they were confused by this, how many users will have to ask for it to come back for it to be reinstated.
Please listen to your community and not dig your heels in and stick to the poor decision to remove "moving time"

    Both confused and mad
    &

This is really poor product management on Garmin's behalf and a quick way to alienate their customers (especially those of us with Forerunner 110s and 210s who don't have the Auto Pause feature enabled in the firmware).

Given that Garmin could easily have added a 'display/hide moving pace' option to the Settings of Garmin Connect, I'm tempted to believe this is a commercial move by Garmin to get more people to buy the higher end products that have the Auto Pause feature.

I'm with mcbadger and iamjojo on the best course of action though - ask for the feature back via Garmin's idea form: http://www8.garmin.com/contactUs/ideas/

I think Moving Pace should be put back or Auto Pause enabled on the 110 and 210.

Its about time they got rid of the moving time, because it never worked properly.

Almost all of my runs are continuous, with no stops, pauses or breaks and they all have a moving time that is different from the elapsed time, but the elapsed time and moving time should have been identical. When looking at individual lap data I even had some cases where the moving time was greater than the elapsed time! This should be impossible.

There was clearly something wrong with the old moving time calculation so it is better that they remove it rather than displaying some meaningless numbers.
