Overcoming Error Msgs on 205w

I had the 'can't unlock maps' error that persisted and customer support suggested re-pasting the unlock code into the Garmin folder (gmapprom.unl) after taking it off the "details" link on 'my dashboard'. That did not work; I kept getting the "insufficient space" message on the upload attempt to which customer service then suggested going into the file folders in the 205w and deleting all the languages and files I don't need like jpgs, etc. Still, I was unable to make enough room for the upload, no matter how daring I was in deleting files that appeared to have no operational value.

I installed a 2GB memory card, hoping that would add the needed space but that did not solve it. For some reason, the devices memory does not share effectively with an external SD card. I wonder what the card slot is for in any event.

Then after running out of options and having spent nearly 2.5 hours trying to repair the 205w,I re-formatted the entire 205w drive, which took about 45 mins. Prior to the reformat, I saved the entirety of remaining files and folders to the 2GB SD Card - just in case I needed to re-populate the internal memory of the GPS. After the reformat was completed, I went back on-line to the Garmin Web Updater and it detected my device and effectively uploaded all and restored all the maps and functionality with new firmware, software and we are back in business. The new DL took over an hour. All my recently found and favorites were still on the device which now is working fine.

Not sure why customer service could not tell me how to do this but I am glad I figured it out.
