Weird pulse zone behavior with Garmin Connect and FR 610

Hi all,

I'm a fatso trying to turn things around by getting in shape. Since I'm in Norway and I'm a real wuss about running outside in the snow, I'm starting inside on my eliptical with 4x4 intervals. I want my heart to have some capacity by the time I go outside running in the spring. :)

Anyway, I have a Frontrunner 610 with the heartrate monitor, and I've created the workout in Garmin Connect according to the specs given by some articles I've read. The workout is sent to the watch just fine. I'm better with computers than I am at working out so I think I've got that part covered. :)

Okey, so I've done some workouts, I can import the results into GC just fine, and I see the pretty graph and other information. All is well! However, some things make little sense to me.

My max heart rate is currently 185 bpm (at least as far as I have been able to measure), and I've entered this into GC. I use the "normal" setup of zone 1 covering 50-60% of heart rate up to zone 5 covering 90-100% of my heart rate.

When I look at the graph for the workout in Garmin Connect and choose to view it by "zones", something really strange happens - it shows me working at 162bpm as being in zone 5.5!! And the graph goes all the way up to 8 for good measure. Considering zone 5 covers up to 100%, and 162 being a smaller number than 185, either math is broken or something in the user interface makes no sense.

I have also noticed that almost no matter what I do, my "Training effect" is always a 5. I read somewhere that this will adjust once it gets to know you, but since I apparantly work out at more than 100% of my capacity (zone-wise, not in the other graphs), I am starting to wonder.

And I thought that this workout felt a little too easy compared to the benefits I'm supposed to get... :)

Any comments on what fractional zones above 5 could mean, when I'm clearly inside the pulse zone boundaries defined in the settings?

Thanks for any insight!

Really, I'm the only one experiencing this? Strange!

I'm also seeing this. It appears that the "default" zones are being used for the graph instead of the running or cycling zone settings. Go into your user profile and setup the default zones to match the running zone and you'll be all set.

Thanks! I will try that, I guess it makes sense yet isn't exactly obvious. :)
