Hello to everybody,
I used to have a Colorado 300 (that was stolen few months ago) for hiking, paragliding and driving, I was kind of happy with it even if it had some features that I really did not like.
Most of them I could only see once I bought the unit because on the specs I could not find enough info about it.
This is why I would like to ask here some help in order to decide to buy or not my next GPS.
I have set my attention on the new eTrex series, in particoular the eTrex20
- Battery life much longer than GPSmap 60/62 series, Colorado, Montana, Oregon...
- NO touchscreen (I hate it)
- No barometer (I have a dedicated alti/vario) nor compass, therefore more battery life
What I really cannot find is the following information:
- Where can I find the customizable menu fields? I would like to be sure that I can customize my screen with at least the following data: speed, altitude, distance from destination, glide to destination.. and I would like to read somewhere the complete list of possible choices. By the way, is there any way to make my own new field? I.e. to have distance and glide to 2 different destination at the same time?
- will I be able to use the unit to save tracks for paragliding competitions? This is a problem that I had with Colorado: gpx tracks must be converted into igc tracks and my trouble was that it required to be used as mass storage device to read tracks and apparently this feature is not good to save .igc with "G record" (to guarantee that the track is genuinely from the device). To know it eTrex X0 series have solved this problem, I need to know if this software can directly download the current track from the device: http://www.gethome.no/stein.sorensen/body_gpsdump.htm
Last but not least: when I hike, most of the time I use the unit as a tracker and I do not look at the screen. Does anybody ever suggested to Garmin a function that switches off the screen in order to save battey? What do you think of it?
Thanks for sharing your ideas,
Fabio
