Hey All,

First post here. I have had some trouble finding the maximum micro-sd card size for the Etrex 30 on the internet. The info book is of no help, so if any of you happen to know the right size it would be greatly appreciated and help immensely prior to buying one on the web.

Take care

I have had some trouble finding the maximum micro-sd card size for the Etrex 30...

My nuvi 1490T and GPSmap 76CSx both work with 16GB microSDHC cards. The SDHC standard allows up to 32GB cards (the SDXC standard is for larger).

    I'd say a 16GB is safe but a 32GB should also work.

    Hey

    Thanks for the info!
I might try to call them monday, as I still haven't found any info in the owners manual on the sd card size limitations (or if there is any for the 30).
Is it true there are limitations that the garmin etrex 30 have (or at least your gps) when it comes to data and map allowance?
I have read somewhere that some only accept like 4gb cards/only a certain size of maps just wasn't sure if that still applies to the newer ones.

Do you use your 16gb card for maps, or is it primarily for storage? I would like to load a ton of maps on the garmin prior to venturing out to places.

    Thanks again

I use a 16GB card in my nuvi 1490T for maps. Note however that any FAT32 formatted card has an limit of 4GB for any one file. That's an inherent limit that has nothing to do with Garmin.

When you add additional maps they're stored in a .img file. Since no .img file can be larger than 4GB that may be a limiting factor. I say "may" because some older products only support one .img file regardless of card size while newer ones, such as my 1490T, support multiple IMG's. I suspect your eTrex 30 does as well but I don't know for sure.

There's also a map tile/chuck limit which can limit how many maps your unit can hold. This limit is not well documented and appears to vary by model and firmware version.

In summary there are limits but as I've already said a 16GB card should work fine.
