Using the 1695 when connected to PC

Hi,

Just getting started with my 1695.

When I connect the usb to the computer can I use it?

What happens is:

I get Loading maps, the a bright screen with the tower Pc grafic, then on the PC the USb window pops up so I can access the device. Then the 1695 screen drops to half intensity and thats all?

Any ideas please?
