610 SD Card - Maps never used.

Evening...

I havbe a Garmin Nuvi 610 for which I bought the lifetime updates for the Euro City Navigator.

When I connect the unit to do a Map Update via the lifetime isntaller, I CAN always install a small map (e.g. France, OR UK, OR Spain/Portugal) but cannot install all of Europe.
Ok, the 610 doesn;t have enough space...

I have a 4gb SD card (whcih I have formatted as both FAT(16) and also FA32...however, I can never get any maps on there to be installed.

The installer ALWAYS reports a "Failed to update maps to computer but the maps on your device have been successfully updated".

When I use MAPSOURCE and MAPISNTALLER, they both tell me that there is no masource product installed and terminate.
BaseCamp lets me 'see' a map but never lets me upload a map to the Nuvi.

WHat stupid thing am i missing...?

My PC is running Windows 7 64-bit...and I ahve attempted to delete and re-install all programs using compatability mode but I still cannot get anywhere...I cannot believe it's impossible for the Nuvi to use the SD card - I ahve confirmed the SD card IS seen by the PC and ALSO when BaseCAmp is started, it can see the SD card also.

I got hold of various img files which, for the entirety of Europe I think is about 2.43GB.

I renamed it to GMAPSUPP.img and put that in the SD:/Garmin/ directory...still nothing.

help me please before I pull out what little is left of my own hair.
