Etrex 20 No Boot

Former Member
Former Member
Hello,

After I power on my unit, I get to the Garmin startup screen and get either the message "Loading Map.." or "Loading Waypoints, Tracks, and Routes..." But the unit never boots properly and then after a while, the unit shuts down. I tried replacing the battery but it still has the same issue. The unit was working properly until I decided to load some new maps recently.

Any suggestions on how I can get my Etrex 20 working properly again? Is there a hard reset I can perform on the unit? I have enjoyed my unit so far, and would like to get it working again.

thanks

    Etrex 20 Failing to start

I have the exact same problem. Etrex 20 willl not boot after adding new maps.

I also cannot get the unit into mass storage mode, when plugging into my PC.

I tried the procedure on page 53 of the owners manual, but this had no effect

You may have loaded a corrupted file
    1. Disconnect the device from your 2. Turn off the device.3. Hold while you connect the decomputer. 4. Continue holding for 30 seconds or until the device goes into mass storage mode.

I have only had it for one day, so should I just return it?

    Here is the fix

I just did the exact same thing and put on a bad map. This should allow you to log in and remove it :-

Recovery Method #1 (Useful if you've just installed new files that might be preventing the unit from booting)

If your GPSMAP freezes during the startup process (i.e. Loading Maps...), and you've just loaded new maps or new gpx files then it could be the new files which are causing the problem. This procedure forces the unit into USB Mass Storage mode so that you can delete (or rename) these files. Follow these steps to recover:

1.Press and hold the "Up" arrow on the 4-way button
2.Attach the GPSMAP to your computer via USB cable while continuing to press "Up"
3.Continue to hold down the "Up" button for 30 seconds while the GPSMAP boots.
4.The GPSMAP should enter USB mass storage mode
5.From your computer remove or rename any gpx, map files (.img or .kmz) files that were recently added
6.Unplug the GPSMAP and power on to see if this remedies the problem

Bertrumuk - you da man !!!

I had exactly this error on my 2 day old etrex 20 and had tried everything - I had even taken it back to the shop who would have swapped it for a new unit but they were out of stock at the time.

I had tried power button for 30 seconds (p53 of the manual) loads of time to no avail.

Tried joystick up for 30 seconds and it worked first go !

Deleted the problem map (Talkytoaster OS50K look&feel version).

Rebooted the etrex and problem solved.

    :D :D :D

    Thanks again

    Glad it worked.

In future I am going to load new maps onto the 1gig card that I have in my Etrex 20. If it locks up again I can just remove the card and delete the map on my computer.
