Routes not showing but pace / distance ok

Garmin 405, latest communicator plugin, ant version, firmware version on 405 (2.8, fairly recent).

It's been a workhorse... worked a long long time over many activities.

Sadly I'm having a problem lately.

I went on a run a few runs ago... and when I got back it repeatedly tried to sync the run but would fail when it looked like it was about 80% complete. It would then just revert back to showing the time. But, since it never completed, it would try again shortly, fail again, and it was caught in a vicious cycle for about 20 minutes probably.

During this time (after a few cycles) I rebooted the watch. It again tried to sync the event and again failed a few times. At this point I actually went in and deleted all history stored on the watch.

It finally stopped trying to sync the event.

A couple days later after I gave it a nice full charge and fresh reboot I went on another run. When I got back it synced fine and sure enough had my accurate time, distance, pace, and splits uploaded. However there is no map! It attempts to load one but on no screens... either "quick view" which shows many activities, activity view, or the player view... none of them show any map. It just spins and spins like its trying to load, but never does.

Now this could be 100% my fault, and if there is a setting that causes this... but I've searched through all of the menus (and the forums too) and can't find a cause or solution. The runs also show no elevation change.

Here's a normal activity from me:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/109404292

And here is one of the "new" runs that shows nothing! I have 3 like this now:
http://connect.garmin.com/activity/112693338

All the stats look right... I run that route a lot, so the time, splits, and distance all seem quite accurate - just no map!

What am I missing or is this thing bungled? I've done multiple re-charges and resets. All latest software.

Thanks for any help!

    Well...

Well I preformed a hard reset today and it seems to have fixed the problem!

I wanted to try that before but just thought that the soft-reset was doing it, and didn't see any immediate information about it.

I did find it today browsing the 405 FAQs on page 8, and sure enough... after running through setup my first run seems to have worked. Just saying in case anyone else has this problem.

Hard reset just like soft reset; hold both buttons until screen goes blank (8 seconds or so) and then unlike soft reset, let up only on the "enter" and hold lap/reset additional 3 seconds. It will then ask you to wipe/hard reset.

I had to re-setup the watch, but it still synced to computer w/o having to re-setup the sync!

I have the same problem. I uploaded all my activities (about 25) to Garmin Connect today, but only the four most recent activities include a map and elevation change. I have read your solution, however there is a question I would like to ask you: will my current activities (without a map and elevation change) show a map and elevation change after performing a hard reset?

I don't mind deleting the activities on my GPS watch as long as everything will be fine on Garmin Connect, but it would be a problem if nothing changed and all my activities were gone. That is why I am a little hesitant. I hope you, or someone else, can help me out.

    Thank you in advance,

  • Usually this happens when you have too many activities stored on your device. When this happens, when you try to record a new activity, it will overwrite the GPS track points of an old activity, but the summary information will be retained. That's probably why you can see the distance and pace, but no maps. The solution to this is that after you have uploaded your activity to Garmin Connect, Training Center, or what ever else you like to use, then delete old activities from your device. You don't necessarily have to do this every time, but perhaps once a month or so, depending on how often and how long you use your device. Many Garmin fitness devices have a menu option to delete activities older than one month just for this purpose.
